Final Fantasy VI for PSP

Post by Betamax001 »

So I really wanna play Final Fantasy VI again and preferably would like to play it on my PSP. How would I go about getting it on there? I saw some torrents for it and downloaded one but all I got was a file that said EBOOT.PBP....

This is a subject far too convoluted to explain here. Do some research of the subject and come back if you have more specific questions (and more specific details would help, like if you have a custom firmware already).

For the reference, EBOOT.pbp is essentially an executable for PSP, usually for UMD games and contained in ISOs.

Did you mean to say Final Fantasy VI, by the way? Do you mean Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) for SNES, Final Fantasy Anthology, or another Final Fantasy altogether? I assumed the SNES version, but I don't know why that would have an EBOOT file (it would be booted with an emulator). Anthology and other PSX games would use an EBOOT.pbp file, though they should have data files as well.

Does your PSP have custom firmware? If it does, just grab a SNES emulator.

I know theyre probably gonna make it for DS sometime, but I don't know when or where my DS is >.<

@crux I did mean Final Fantasy VI, and I think the thing I downloaded was supposed to be from the FFAnthology disc. And I don't have custom firmware. So my questions are, do I need that or if you dont need it to run an EBOOT file, where exactly what folder do i put it in?

You need a custom firmware to do anything that Sony doesn't endorse. And that's where the subject gets far more convoluted. How to get a custom firmware depends on the PSP model and the firmware on the PSP. The method of which to flash custom firmware onto your PSP is a lengthy and confusing subject, so look towards a guide on the web for that (I modded my PSP years ago, so I'm not current on the subject). Older firmwares can be flashed without any additional purchases, while many later firmwares require a Pandora's battery (which wasn't around back when I did my mod, so I don't know much about it), which will require a second battery pack.

As for FFVI specifically, get the SNES version and use an emulator if you manage to get the custom firmware. Final Fantasy Anthology is already an emulation, I believe, so emulating an emulation seems like a silly idea. There's the GBA version as well, if you want a more current version (though I have no idea how well PSP emulates GBA).

Well this sucks, I was hoping to not be able to do this easy. Oh well...I would be more prone to getting the GBA version if I knew where my SP was.

I will second that you should not bother with the FF Anthology disk. The sound is off and the load times are atrocious. I'm talking a couple second pause before every battle, but they don't have something like FF7's battle swirl to mask it.

Custom firmware is very easy to install on a PSP, I say you go for it. Usually I link people to the guide that I used, it was seriously idiot proof, and one of the best written guides I've seen. Unfortunately, the creater took down all his guides for whatever reason. I just read this one over and it looks almost as good...

Make sure your model PSP can run CFW, the newer Slim's can't.

But doesn't the game load faster off the PSP's memory stick? Either way, I would just play the SNES version on an emulator. Take up less room on your memory stick, if nothing else.
