Here's what I did. Don't go crazy with figures first of all. Figures are cool but you should use them sparingly and really only display the best detailed ones. Second, don't clutter your walls with posters. If you have posters you want to display, put them up symmetrically and use frames (I still need frames.)
Don't mix and match furniture from your childhood or college days. Put some real money into some matching sets with colors that compliment each other. Modern lighting also helps a lot during night game sessions. Dimmer switches on lamps or over head lighting looks cool. I got a remote controlled light in my room
Keep your system and game collection squared away and not cluttered. That means velcroing or zip tying your cables and not leaving your consoles on the carpet. Also don't throw stuff into cardboard boxes or plastic bins. Give them their own place either in a hideaway cabinet or a specialized rack that displays them well and give easy access.
Sounds a bit anal but that's my way to making a game room feel more grown up.

But isn't point of having a game room is to feel like a oversized kid?
A place you wish you had as a kid but couldn't afford it? Thats how I modeled mine.

Meh, I was always kind of a mature kid. I think you can still be a child at heart and appreciate a little class.

Re: Ideas on how to maintain a more stylish adult looking room?
Mate i feel your pain.
Everyone here in this thread have some very valid opinions on the topic. To me its true - part of you (the kid part) wants ALL your great collections on display - games/consoles/boxes/toys/action figures/sound system etc. and part of you realises you are an adult and you would like to keep a clean uncluttered living room.
If i had my own big place - i would have a standard loungeroom and dedicated games room which can be as cluttered and nerdy as you like. I however, only have a one bedroom apartment as i live in Dubai where places are very expensive to rent.
One thing that will make ANY games room/area look messy are wires. Loads and loads of wires and we have LOTS of them. Throw in a rock band set and you are even more screwed. Unless hte house you have built is made with gaming in mind, you are going to have exposed wires. my rear speaker wires are taped down and run under the couches but behind my set up there is not much you can do.
I think one thing that is GREAT = floating shelves.

you can see here i have a lot of things but this 4 way window shelf and floating shelves (top left) keep a lot of it out of harms way
this little thing allows me to run my cables through.

I chose my loungeroom to be my living and gaming room so its always neet but its confortable. i have a good A/V set up so its a nice place to hang out. All my toys and that are in my bedroom - same as books and my other collectables.
Ignore the fact that i have replaced the art with posters - but lighting helps too. i dont like bright garish lights and i dont use the lights that came with the house - i prefer nicer lighting. in the right cnr u can see my Tisio lamp and another standing cabinet i use to display my collectables (closed and sealed)

Shot of floating shelves before i put more things on them..

Mate would you mind taking a quick snap of say, the back of your tv/amp where all the cables run through? I just bought some cable ties and have NO idea how to go about this. there are speaker wires, HDMI Cables, power cables running all over the placeUpsidedown Fuji wrote:

I've found that keeping the controllers in drawers, only taking them out when I'm playing, looks much more "grown-up". Since taking this photo, I've removed all accessories (except for the DreamEye which I like too much to stick in a drawer) and replaced the VCR with a Saturn. I've also attached metal feet to the shelf so it is taller and put a potted fern next to the cabinet.

Re: Ideas on how to maintain a more stylish adult looking room?
Here's the back of my tv as you requested. The silver thing is a lamp, and you can probably guess what the two long white SEGA things are. I cheat my cord problem by tucking my system in a corner. Not only does it give more room for cables, it also gives my TV and systems breathing room.
It's not as clean as when I first set it up because I've added a couple more network cables and another game system, but it still is very clean IMO.

I use this plastic coil to bind my wires together. It was 100 yen and I have no idea if it is availible in other countries at the same price.
I also use those plastic coated metallic ties that come with new electronic equipment to tie up any other loose odds and ends. I have a ton of them and they do a good job for temporary wire cleanups.
Not sure if this helps you but at least you can see what my idea of clean is.

Re: Ideas on how to maintain a more stylish adult looking room?
ok yep u can get them here as well. i see what you mean, its never gonna look TRULY Neat unless the room was designed with cables in mind. for me all my cables are going to seperate areas so im not even sure i can tie them up like you have. will give it a go when the rest of my consoles arrive.
