How to read capacitor

Post by Hobie-wan »

Ok, so in pulling out video cards to see what I had for Racket's recording PC question, I'm looking at a card in my pile with blown capacitors again. Other than the blown caps the card looks fine. I want to replace the caps, but I'm not sure how to read this kind of cap. They are the aluminum can type that do not have the plastic shrink label on them, I understand how to read those. These are the ones with the solid aluminum can and the printed information on top. I know the colored edge is negative and the voltage line is easy.

They say in green:
1000
6.3V
R1

I'm guessing perhaps 1000 µf, but I'm not sure and I have no idea what the R1 means. Every page my google fu turns up says letters are the tolerance, but there's no R on the charts I'm seeing.

Should be measured in pico farads. 1000 micro farads is very high considering the maximum voltage for the capacitor. It is common for most non-electrolytic capacitors to be marked in pico farads.

Ok, that makes sense. Any ideas on the R1 so I know what sort of replacement I'm looking for? I'll probably end up replacing them with regular plastic shrunk cans.

I would replace it with an electrolytic 1000pF capacitor. Don't worry about tolerance too much. They tend to be very much the same so long as you keep to the same sort of materials. Also the electrolytics are cheaper to buy.

All righty. It was a toasty card from a friend, but it just looks like the caps need replacing. If I spend a few dollars getting it working again, great, if not, no big loss.
