I have the room on my property and a desire to get involved in archery (though probably not bow hunting, at least initially) - but I have no idea where to begin.
Does anyone else here do anything with the sport? Anyone have a good set up or recommendations for bows, arrows, targets, etc.? Outside of video games, I haven't shot a bow and arrow since summer camp when I was a kid, so my skill is probably zero - but I'd like to fix that .
When I was in Boy Scouts, I was infamously bad at archery. I could hit anything but my target. I killed a raccoon that ran behind the range once. I was aiming for the target and didn't notice the poor little guy. I did get a bullseye once- in another person's target.
Strange thing is I can hit moving targets just fine with a shotgun, but have trouble with a stupid bow.

See I have no idea what that means. As a kid I just had a stick with a string on it. Why can't things stay simple?

They can be simple. a traditional bow is what most people think of when they hear bow and arrow (string on a stick) a compact bow is more complicated with a system of pulleys and such and is mostly used with hunting.

I'm thinking of a compound (compact?) bow, I think, as I might want to segue into hunting at some point. Not sure what the advantages/disadvantages of either are, though. I've only shot a traditional bow, and that was many years ago/
I have some experience with a bow: I went through the scouting program and grow up in Georgia and Alabama - Though you will find no love of the cheating compound bows from me. I am a fan of the Welsh long bow and the Arabian recurve, I use to hunt with both. Sadly the only bow I have now is a pos composite compound, but it was a gift when I graduate highschool.
Compound bows give you the advantage of being able to use a sighting mechanism to aim your shot and are also alot easier to hold in a drawn position for longer periods of time. Traditional bows are more used for reflex shooting where you would draw the bow back and release quickly.

Oh, well then I probably would want a traditional bow as I don't want it to feel like shooting a gun or something (with sights). Sounds like more skill is needed with a traditional.
