Has anyone checked this out: http://www.thestoryofstuff.com
Once you get past the first part about saving the planet and you get to the consumer part... its real eye opening.

Sorry, but once she got to the bit about "perceived obsolescence", especially the bit about how computer companies are are purposely changing the computers each year, and how all that changes is the processor, and each new version is the same except it's a different "shape", I stopped listening. None of that is true :\

While I can't vouch for that part, It's a sad truth when she talks about Extraction.

We are running our planet dry, and on top of that, we don't know what we are doing to our bodies.

Sometimes a simple analogy goes a long way in making a point to the masses. I do agree with you and the video. Yeah the video oversimplified it, but I do believe that the idea is present in big corporations. Think about the Compaqs and HP's you can't replace parts in them without paying the original company, and now you cant change parts because it messes up the "tattoo" forcing you to buy their parts and services.

The second I heard her talk about the computer I just closed it. I know how we are running our planet dry etc. I know perfectly well how I'm screwing up my body. Yet I feel oddly happy with how I treat myself. I mean, I tend to eat pretty healthy, but I love ice cream and I love pot. Asside from that point its pointless to try and change the general mindset of humanity at once. I'm not sure if its relevent but so you know, in my opinion, there is no perfect world, and all utopia's are really dystopia's in my book, and there are no perfect humans, and I feel it's stupid we idealize non-existant forms of ourselves.

I agree with some of what she's saying, I was just being a little facetious with my comment.
However, everything in a computer is user replaceable, I don't think any computer on the market has a warranty sticker like a console (except laptops, maybe?). Computers are getting faster because there is a demand for it, not to just try to screw consumers over continuously.

At the end she states that this is not just the "way we are" that we created this system, and she does have some valid facts to make that point even if we don't believe it. So, if you believe her evidence and we created this "system," I don't see why we cant create another one.

The reason that another system won't be created, is because there will never be another system that makes as much money as quickly.

We can adjust this system (going green, etc.) but we can't, or won't, change it. We're going to run it straight into the ground, because it's all we know.

It's cultural now.

Buy more shit, you need it, it defines you.
