Playstation 2 Left on for weeks.
A friend of mine has a playstation 2 that his kids left on for weeks. I told him I would look at it and see if I could find the problem.
When the system is turned on it boots up and everything, but it almost sounds like an Atari when the bios is loading and the sound plays. Its all high pitched and a little broken up. It no longer reads discs at all. I took the laser out and booted it up and it still makes the sound. So do you all think Its worth swapping out the laser to see if it will work or has it fried something hard to replace? I didn't see anything burnt on the board but I haven't tested any fuses etc yet. Has anyone heard anything like this before?

couple of friends of mine left their ps2 running, as far as I can remember for weeks, when they came back for it , it was still running as they left it.
I think it is pretty durable

Sounds like his kids need to learn a lesson about the importance of taking care of their belongings. Even if you can get it working again, you shouldn't.

It's true. I had a roommate who accidentally left his PS2 on for 500 hours, it was fine afterwards.

Could be that they overheated the Bios chip and corrupted it?

Sounds like it could have gotten a little cooked, though I've pretty much just cleaned dust and lenses on PS2s. Was the fan still spinning? Any bulging caps?

If it is corrupted do I just get another bios chip or can you reflash it or something? If I need a chip what would it cost and where would I get one?DNT 2.5 wrote:Could be that they overheated the Bios chip and corrupted it?

I am not sure how fast the fan suppose to be, but I think it is spinning a little slow. I had thought that maybe the fan got worn out from being on so long and messed something up.Hobie-wan wrote:Sounds like it could have gotten a little cooked, though I've pretty much just cleaned dust and lenses on PS2s. It should be spinning fast enough that the blades are a blur, like fans in your PC. It its making groaning noises, then the bearing(s) are dead. Otherwise its probably still ok.Peachy Gaming wrote: I am not sure how fast the fan suppose to be, but I think it is spinning a little slow.
