Sega Genesis (model 2) A/V Out cable options

Post by nielse16 »

I FINALLY pulled out my old systems (NES, Genesis, SNES) and I want to connect them to my TV without using RF converters. Answers are pretty straightforward for the Nintendo consoles, but I have Sega questions.

What options are available for a Sega Genesis (model 2) without modding? At this point I am just looking for composite/RCA, but I'm also curious about S-Video, Component, etc. if I ever get the money for a better TV.

Did Sega ever release an official STEREO A/V cable (yellow/white/red) or was only MONO (yellow/white) released? In my research, I've seen stereo variations, but only the mono in a Sega brand box.

Any suggestions or reputable sellers since the Racketboy store is currently out of stock? :)

Eh, there are a ton on ebay. I'd just go pick one based on seller feedback, price, and if they have a picture where the wires don't look too spindly. Composite and RF are the only options without modding.

Should I buy the official mono cable and split the audio or buy a third party stereo cable?

I'd go for the 3rd party stereo.

I think I found the one I want. Does anyone have an extra MK-1635 lying around? :)

If you have as 1st Party RF Switch you can convert it to a Mono RCA Cable. If you RF Switch is 3rd party you may be able to convert it into a Stero RCA Cable.

And the BEST cable you can get for your Genny is a RGB cable, look on eBay they cost more than the standard RCA cables but they output much better quality picture. You can make your own but its a fair bit of work, check mmmonkeys site for details.

An RGB cable? Do you mean component or SCART? I'd love to have a component cable for my genesis model 1. An ebay search for "genesis RGB cable" only shows SCART cables.

Its SCART but you can convert them with a $5 converter from your local electronics or TV store.
