I'd say, um, I guess I don't know the industry, like at all. Though most of the best designers these days are from the wayback days. Warren Spector wanted to be a film critic, and that definitely shows up in Deus Ex.
Writing is a good way to get into game creation. Start a blog and write tons of reviews, or get on the staff of some badass page.
