250GB PS3 revealed!
Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
Sometimes I think there should be a topic on the PlayStation 3 that doesn't mention backwards compatibility. You know, for a change.
Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
Don't you know? When you buy a PS3 you're required to give up your PS2, so if you get the version without BC you can't play your PS2 library anymore.

So everyone should buy an expensive upscaler? Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't need to?MrPopo wrote:Don't you know? When you buy a PS3 you're required to give up your PS2, so if you get the version without BC you can't play your PS2 library anymore.
The point is that Sony has the ability to allow all PS3's to play PS2 games via software emulation, but instead wants to sell them to us again over PSN.
They are doing the same thing with the upcoming PSPGo. They could let us convert our existing UMD games to work on the PSPGo, but would rather have us buy the games again. The worst part is they are right. Plenty of idiots out there who will support this shit.
Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
Or they could, you know, not buy an expensive upscaler and play the games anyway.Inazuma wrote:So everyone should buy an expensive upscaler? Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't need to?
Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
You're right. Until now I never realized but my PS2 simply doesn't work on my TV without an upscaler. No wonder all my games seemed to play the same.Inazuma wrote:So everyone should buy an expensive upscaler? Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't need to?MrPopo wrote:Don't you know? And, as we've already established, since your current PS2 doesn't work now that you've purchased a PS3 that will be your only way to play PS2 games. The point is that Sony has the ability to allow all PS3's to play PS2 games via software emulation, but instead wants to sell them to us again over PSN.
Please, explain how this would work, what with the fact that the UMD is a proprietary format, so the only reader is the PSP, and the games themselves don't have any information to tie them to a single owner. How exactly would Sony make it so that if I owned a UMD copy of Star Ocean I could download it onto my PSPGo and at the same time prevent someone else from using the same UMD to get their own copy unless my digital version was deleted first? They are doing the same thing with the upcoming PSPGo. Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
I really do hope that they do the whole "Transfer UMDs to PSP Go Units" deal. I have a friend of mine who already has a huge collection of PSP games. Free collection for the win.
Surprised people feel like they need to use an upscaler on PS2 games. I've played many PS2 games on HDTVs w/ Component Cables, and never thought there was any problem. Hell, I've played many Sega Saturn games on HDTVs w/ S-Video Connection, and never thought there was any problem.

Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
It would be nice if you could just convert it and have it work with no restrictions but I guess that would be too nice.
Maybe they could figure out a way to accept UMDs and give you the download version in exchange. However, that would probably be the worst possible outcome (best in Sony's eyes) since they would be able to destroy the UMD's so no one else could play or sell them.
What about if the converted game only worked for a limited time like 30 days? After the time runs out, you could quickly connect the UMD again just to confirm you still have it. It wouldn't need to transfer again since the data would remain on the PSPGo.
For anyone who thinks playing old games on an HDTV looks good, I have to ask if you have ever played one through a nice upscale device. Not only does it look much sharper but there is less input lag. Play a PS2 game on a PS2 and then on a BC PS3, compare the difference and then tell me which you prefer.

Re: 250GB PS3 revealed!
All I know is, playing Sengoku Basara X and then playing BlazBlue on the same HDTV, there was no difference in quality. They both looked amazing, and we could barely believe that we were playing on a PS2 at the time. Can't really try playing SBX on a BC PS3, seeing as its a Japanese PS2 game.
I can say the same for many of the games we played on the PS2. The only game that looked sub-par was Melty Blood: Act Cadenza.

Here is a photo of F-Zero upscaled to 1600X1200 with an RGB cable, on my 52" 1080p HDTV. I used a $20 camera to take this photo so it doesn't look nearly as good as it actually does but hopefully you can tell how sharp it is.
