I have tested RGB and composite on the SNES (using a PAL SNES) wiring directly to the pins. What I discovered is that composite on the SNES is actually a bit better than RGB (unusual I know) and also RGB on the SNES is a bit darker. Frankly, I suggest just using composite!

You must be doing something wrong because my Super Famicom looks fantastic using the official RGB cable. The US SNES and Japanese SFC are two very different beasts. RGB cables for one are not compatible with the other without modification:

You'll need at least 220uF caps on the R, G and B lines. Maybe 75ohm resistors too, depending on your TV/monitor.
