famicom question

So there's a guy on my local craigslist with an original famicom with 12 games, he's asking $100.

Is this a good deal? And if so would I even be able to play it, or would i need some special cords to make it work in the us?

I don't know Famicom pricing, but generally I would say its not a good deal unless the system is minty and boxed and there are some really good games. Famicoms were plentiful in Japan like NES were abundant here. I certainly wouldn't pay $100 for a NES with 12 random games.

I didn't think so either, I'm just not sure about famicom pricing either. The only game I recognized was rockman 2.

Famicom systems go from about $3 here in Japan for a loose console with the 2 controllers (being attached, and all...) and no hook-ups, to boxed systems for $40-50. So, depending on the condition of the Famicom and what's included (accessories and games), it might be worth $100. Do you have a link to a picture of it and the games included?

Rockman 2 is actually worth quite a bit. It's hard to find for less than $20 (unless you're out in the Japanese countryside), and routinely hits $30 or more in Japanese yen. That is in local game shops.

As far as running a Japanese system in America, you should have no trouble. Power is about the same, and as far as I know you'll have to be on channel 90-something in order for the RF switch to work, instead of channel 3/4 (I've never tried it, as I live in Japan).

I've never had a problem with my Famicom on an American TV set. I think it's either channel 95 or 96 depending on what you have your console set to.

If you do decide to pick this up (although it doesn't really sound like a very good deal) make sure you test it before money changes hands. I'm not under the impression that they break down very often, but because the console has no LED that lights up with the system it's difficult to tell if it's working without a television.

Top right is Gradius II which is worth a bit. Below that looks like Operation Wolf. Top left is a Contra label, but the cart is blue, so its likely a bootleg, especially since the bottom cart is a boot as well. If it were legit it would look like the Gradius II cart and have a hole in the left side AFAIK. White cart looks lke After Burner maybe? The one to the left of that kinda of looks like Fist of the North Star.

Gradius II does help the overall value some, though it still looks overpriced to me from what we can see of the games.

Gradius II and Rockman 2 are the only games of note, there. Contra would up the value... but that is definitely a bootleg. The label isn't even on straight!

So, you've got an unboxed Famicom (street value in Japan for a clean FC: $5-20). Rockman 2 is worth $10-20 (probably 20), and Gradius II is worth the same. IF (BIG if) Contra isn't a bootleg, it's also worth a fair bit. But, it looks like a bootleg.

Conclusion: probably not worth it unless you REALLY want a Famicom.
