Ever just feel like something's cursed?

Post by Hobie-wan »

So I'm not superstitious at all, but man, its just one of those days that if I was, I'd think my car is cursed. So I've had my car for just a few weeks shy of 3 years. Its not the fastest, prettiest, or the lightest gas sipper. But it still runs well, I'm comfortable in it, and it just feels right. I should probably get a new car, but most new cars don't appeal to me and the choices with manual transmission (that I can afford and are practical) are very few.

So it was in pretty good shape with low miles for a 7 1/5 year old car when I got it in early October 2006.

Then before I'd even had the car a month, I got hit entering the freeway when all of us suddenly had to slow down and the lady behind me wasn't paying attention. My bumper was nearly knocked all the way off and I scraped up a wheel when I got bounced into the guard wall. It was her fault and her insurance took care of it.

At the end of February 2008 late one Friday night, I driving down a highway with 3 lanes each direction with an open middle turn lane when a guy with his kid in a minivan came from a side parking lot turning to go the other way and tagged my rear right. Stupidly I didn't call police and nobody stopped to be a witness. I clearly had the right of way and he was apologetic in front of his son, but then he became a lying jackass later. His insurance company dragged their feet and it took them a MONTH to get a story from the guy. I have liability only, so I got screwed.

I kept driving my car despite the fact the wheel was off kilter because I was trying to fight it. Though lucky me, a lady backed into more or less the same part of my car in the parking lot at work in August last year. Thankfully she was honest and left a note since I didn't see it until after dark. I got to pay for the suspension fix, but her screwup paid for the bodywork from the other guy hitting me.

This morning I went to send off a package to a fellow Racketeer, and when I came out of the post office, someone had backed into me on the other side. Thankfully she stayed too. Hopefully everything will be covered without me having to fight, but damn I gotta go through the insurance circus and the pain in the ass of going to visit an adjuster and then get to and from the shop.

So yeah, that's 4 times I've been hit in this car in just under 3 years, none of them my fault. Ever just have some thing that just seems to have 'bad luck' even though you like it and don't want to let it go?

I must be cursed too because I've had to go through some car related shit as well. My curse has to do with having people hit my car when it's parked. First off, let me say that I am just fine at parking my car and I never park it illegally.

When I was living in my mother's house years ago, I had to park my car in the street along the curb. One morning I find my car damaged along with a note. Turns out it was the woman living just across the street from us. She backed her car out of her own driveway all the way across the street into mine. This street was pretty damn wide so I was surprised anyone could suck that much backing up a car. Anyway, she was nice and paid for everything.

Next incident was probably the worst. I was living in an apartment at the time and my roommate's friend was telling a story about he just witnessed a hit and run in the parking lot. We go outside to check it out and sure enough, it was my car! According to the story, some asshole driving a pickup truck hit my parked car and then took off without leaving a note. I had to pay for this one myself which sucked.

Another time I had my car parked in the driveway of a girlfriend's house and her mother backed up out of the garage into my car, pretty fast too. She didn't expect a car to be in the driveway and didn't look behind her when she was backing up. Sigh...at least her insurance took care of the cost.

Yet another time, I had my car parked along the street in my neighborhood, and had someone back up into it from the driveway on the other side of the street. They knew it was my car and came to my house to apologize. At this point, I wasn't that surprised. It was a common thing for me.

Last one. Only a few months from the last incident, again someone hits my parked car. This time it was parked along the street in a large cul-de-sac so there should have been plenty of room to get around it, but the driver was a 16 year old girl who didn't know what she was doing. It was late at night so she didn't even see my car, apparently. I talked with her father and he took care of everything.

People must really suck at driving if they hit parked cars. I have been driving for 11 years now and had my parked car hit a total of 5 times -_-

What's your budget? Seems like there's a decent amount of small cars with manuals out there. Although small car prices are getting too high. I priced out a 2010 mazda 3 and it cost over $18k to get one with air conditioning and power locks.

I thought my M3 was cursed. As soon as the warranty expired, things started going south with the electrical system. So I sold it and bought another one, then that one kept having similar problems. SO I decided that BMWs and I weren't a good match due to their build quality and vowed never to buy a European car again.

Yeah both of my parking incidents were during the day in very spacious parking lots. When I lived on a dead end narrow street that didn't have an enlarged area to turn around... nobody hit my car. Never sideswiped when I managed to park right in front of my place, never hit when I had to park at the end. Granted the street wasn't super busy being a dead end, but there were always lost people driving down our street.

I had a yellow turbo Beetle before this that I purchased new. I loved it when it was new and when everything was working, but I had all sorts of issues that got worse over time that were hard or impossible to fix. I sold it about a month before I got the black Neon.

Eh looks like it might be worth at least looking at a Mazda 3 hatch. I guess another thing that disappoints me about current small cars is that the gas mileage isn't any better than my 10 year old Neon unless I start sacrificing other things. I have an RT, but even as old as it is it was getting around 30 MPG when I lived farther from work and did a lot of highway driving. With all the short driving I do now I still get 25+. I had a base model Neon coupe before the New Beetle and I remember it got better mileage than the RT.

Eh, I just need to get off my ass and get the 75 Beetle going too, then I can drive around being slow and uncomfortable and thoroughly enjoying it. :P
