Anybody think that this could work?

Post by UBERTRON777 »

So I want to be able to play Galactic Protector for the Master System but to do so requires using the very rare analog controller. Could I just use a 2600 driving controller as a replacement?

Unfortunately it won't work. Atari pinout used 2 pins specifically for the paddle potentiometers. The Master system pinout steals one of those to use for button 2 and the other for the light gun.

I doubt it would work, but I also doubt you'll hurt anything giving it a try.

I believe that the 2600 analog controllers sent analog signals directly to the console where it was digitized there. I think that any analog SMS controller would have to digitize it in the controller and send that to the console. But I could be wrong.

Ok, I looked a little more and not only is it not going to work, it might be a really bad idea.

SMS uses pins 5 and 9 for +5 volts and button B. The Atari uses pins 5 and 9 for the paddle potentiometers. Also the SMS doesn't use pin 7 at all, but it is +5 volts on Atari paddles.

So yeah, not gonna work and could fry something.:!:

Oh ok, I was just under the impression that the 2600, 7800, Master System, and Genesis all used the same ports and that their controllers could be interchangeable. Thanks for clearing that up.

The Master System and Genesis are interchangable (though the Master System controller is obviously sub-functional on the Genesis). I don't even use my original SMS controller anymore, since the D-pad is so sub-par (it's one of the original ones with the cord out the side). I believe the 2600 and 7800 are also interchangable. It's just between the two companies you can't trade.

Code: Select all

I thought you could use a Genesis controller on an Atari.
You can. You can use it with Colecovision as well. I have read you can even use the Sega lighgun on an Atari System.

In the past I remember reading you could use an Atari 2600 controller on your Genesis as well, you just need to have the Genesis controller plugged in on start up.
