Arcade Masters Incorporated Nintendo Expansion Module ?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The back of that thing looks similar to a parallel port. I would guess that both controller connectors go into a single NES, and then you connect the audio video ports to the NES. Now you can communicate with the NES through that port on the back of this unit. I assume you can send data to the controller ports and read the audio and video lines. If there is any internal circuitry in this thing (it doesn't just pass the controller and audio video lines through) then you can probably control it through that back port also. So maybe this enables you to do some post processing of the video and audio signals. Or maybe it is just a pass through adapter that hooks the NES up to some TV unit with integrated controllers.

Edit: Just noticed that Limewater already mentioned the possibility of connecting a single NES to some external unit.

Edit2: I think the NES controller port has a clock line, one output line to latch the button signals, and one input line to read the button press values. So theoretically it should be possible for two NES to communicate through the controller ports.

I emailed Nintendo (I know, I know), and the rep I spoke to didn't have any idea of what it could be. Even with the Nintendo name on it, I'm thinking this is probably third party. The search continues.

Do you honestly expect Nintendo reps to know what an extremely obscure and outdated piece of tech is? Oh well, thanks, though. The search indeed continues!

You know, you might try Penny Arcade. If they're intruiged enough by it they'll release their hounds and generate an answer for you.

You can connect two genesis consoles together through the controller ports, so it is possible it linked two NES's. However I am going to guess that it somehow interfaced with a bigger device. An arcade cabinet of some kind would be the easiest answer (though Ive not seen a pinout like that in a cab).

Same. My first thought when I saw that were the Nintendo Vs. cabs, but looking online I haven't been able to find anything that looks like that thing at all. Even then, the AV inputs weird me out. Maybe the thing is some sort of ancient hotel hookup? That would possibly explain the controller extension cords.
