So what are the most difficult fighters to reach "tournament" level proficiency at? It seems like SFIII:3s is an obvious choice, but what about Virtua Fighter players? The move list in VF will make you faint if you are used to 3s. I'd like to hear some opinions.

I second the Virtua Fighter series. You can't really button mash on it.
Street Fighter III can be one of the more challenging 2D fighters

I've seen pro matches of MVC2 and event though that game has a mostly straightforward system it looks more intense than any other fighting game at competitive levels. Some of the top tier characters have amazing keep away games so they are just flying around the screen. At the same time theres helpers popping up and projectiles flying everywhere it makes it look like a shmup instead of a fighter. I know a lot of people think the vs. series is a joke, but when I see it played like that the raw speed alone makes it look daunting to master. Maybe its not taken seriously because of the lack of balance, but the 3s roster played in tournaments seems to be pretty small too.

I would definitely say Virtua Fighter, I've tried so many times to get into it and i just get dizzy.
I bought VF4 on the PS2 when i got my Hori stick, and although I could definitely appreciate how 'deep' the fights could be if I became any good at it, I struggled to pull off anymore than 60% of the moves in practice mode :s. I was playing as that Shaolin guy.
So yeh definitely VF I would say is most difficult.
Also, I'm not sure whether it's just because i wasn't 'brought up' on them, or whether it's just cos I'm crap, but I do find it a lot harder to get far in KOF series (and also Last Blade) than I do in Capcom/SF series.

KOF was hard to get into initially, but once you break that knowledge barrier, pop your KOF cherry, if you will, they become easier to deal with. I had early experience with the original Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown, and KOF 94, arcade versions, and I learned some of the SNK eccentricities. I was rewarded, however, by excellent games.

Maybe I should play a lot of AOF first then, cos I love that zooming in stuff, I play as that girl in the Aikido pants - she is cool IMOmarurun wrote:KOF was hard to get into initially, but once you break that knowledge barrier, pop your KOF cherry, if you will, they become easier to deal with. I think the best SF3 T.T. players are the most tedious at times. The guys that can parry over and over are fun to watch, not to play. Problem is alot of them play more for tech than to be ruthless with tech. You can get better at SF3 forever I think.
I really like Virtua Fighter, and it could be argued its challenge is deeper and more fun than SF3. VF5's animation blows me away. The character hit detection is awesome especially noticable in replays. SF3 is more for twitch fiends IMO, gotta respect that though!
