GoldenEye Will Never See a Digital Release?

Apparently Rare, the British game developer behind such classics as Conker's Bad Fur Day and Banjo-Kazooie, has been receiving comments from fans asking about the possibility for a digital release of GoldenEye 007. According to the developer, the likelihood of GoldenEye 007 being released on the Virtual Console or Xbox LIVE Arcade is very slim:

"That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we're long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere … probably."

In other words, GoldenEye 007 will probably never see a digital release on the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360. The developer has had trouble in the past trying to bring the game over to the Wii and Xbox 360
, and it doesn't look they will have any luck again if they were to attempt a second try. However, the possibility for a digital release of GoldenEye 007 is not dead, just highly unlikely.

Perfect Dark is coming out on XBLA though. And honestly (and I swear to God I'm not trolling) I think its better than Golden Eye.

I loved Goldeneye when it came out... I played multiplayer for hours on end with my friends. That was the original FPS party game!

I never had an n64 as a kid, but everyone else did and Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, and Super Smash were our multiplayer games of choice. So this game was something I loved as a kid. A while ago I tried playing Golden Eye and couldn't. It looks awful, the controls are no longer that great, there is no real aiming involved, and playing it on hd tvs makes it look like nauseating pixel vomit. I could be wrong, but I think that a lot of people want it because of nostalgia and the moment it did go digital, the same people would be sorely dissapointed. Unless it would be released with better textures and somehow modified controls. Again, I could be wrong and this is all just a result of playing too many shooters since goldeneye.

It's unfortunate that GoldenEye has 2-3 people holding the rights. You've got Microsoft who owns Rare, you've got the people who own the James Bond franchise, and I suspect Nintendo has a stake in it too (as an XBLA release). I wonder if it's the James Bond people that are holding up the works.

By James Bond people you mean MGM, who is owned in part by Sony.
