Possible NES Max controller problems

Post by jfe2 »

I just picked up an NES Max controller and an NES Zapper for $12 at a flea market. They are both pretty dirty, but that seemed like a decent price for a few accessories that I needed. I have never used a Max controller, but the slider on it feels very loose, and the black circle around the slider feels loose as well.

I won't be able to test it out until tomorrow, but I just wanted to see if anyone here has any experience with the Max controller. Are they supposed to be so loose? The slider has literally no resistance... I can take it apart to fix it if needed, but I don't want to do that until I know for sure.

The two NES Max's that I've come across all had slider's with no resistance. They both seemed to work, but I never cared for the slider responsiveness in general.

I wouldn't be too worried about it until you try it out.

Yeah, 'Ninty took a path of least resistance approach with those things, and it can either suck or be awesome after you've used one for a while.

The red disc is supposed to be loose. The idea is that you can slide it around easily, but it is pressing down that actually makes it go in that direction. You can actually press down on the black ring too. Its just personal preference if you get used to liking the way it works. I didn't care for them much myself.

Thanks for the responses guys! It's good to know I probably don't have to worry about it.

Biggest issue I've had with mine is that the A button has somehow warped in on itself, as if it were melted but with no evidence that it did so. I mean, instead of a flat surface on top, the button instead comes down at a sudden angle. I have no idea how it happened.

Diagram, since I don't own a camera:

Ack,

Was it like that when you got it, or has it happened since you've owned it?

I couldn't say because I don't remember. It's one of those things I accumulated over the years and have no idea how.

I tested it out today and it seems to work fine. Not the greatest controller in the world, but worth adding to my collection for sure. Thanks for the help guys!
