Re: Short game endings
how about that fucking ending to the new prof. layton, I usually don't cuss, but that ending was fucking bull shit
Re: Short game endings
Dahahaha! That was one of several infuriating endings back in the 80's. There were several games like this that I played tirelessly only to be completely let down by the ending. Here are a few classic examples I remember.onemanfilmcrew wrote:Speaking of short game endings, sometimes you just need a short and sweet one. The best example of this is Karnov

Congratulations!!!!
The End
RAMPAGE (NES).
This game was fun for 5 minutes, then you wanted to take it back to Blockbuster. But I felt compelled to complete this poor translation of an arcade classic, which takes roughly 5 continuous hours (no saves!) of playtime. Oh yeah, and you only get one fucking song to listen to for the entire game. And it's a shitty song.
1942 (NES).
This was another bad arcade port that just went on and on repeatedly with the same boring bullshit. Granted, 1942 holds a special place in shmup history for being one of the pioneers of the genre, but this game was like 50 levels long and the scenery never really changes. I was so bored by the end, I was really hoping for something good as a reward for my troubles. What I got was simply the word "Congratulation". That's their typo, not mine.
IKARI WARRIORS (NES)
Ikari Warriors was hard. You move slower than turtles smoking pot, so you are bound to get shot. If you didn't know the ABBA code, your shit was wrecked before you were even an 1/8th of the way through the first level. Oh yeah, and the levels were insanely long. They each took like 30 minutes of non stop forward scrolling. With no saves or passwords, that meant that if you were going to pass Ikari Warriors, aside from God like skill and Buddha like patience, you also had to be able to hold your pee in for 2-3 hours because that's how long it took and you needed to pass it in one sitting. Oh, and did I mention that the totally awesome ABBA code stopped working whenever you got to a boss? If your last life ended while you were there, it was back to the beginning of the fucking game for you. Even worse, the final boss launched endless rocket bombs at you that your slowkari warrior didn't have a chance of dodging. You had to know of one of the special glitch places where you could stand and throw grenades without getting hit. The end boss was a bitch, and without being able to continue, you weren't very likely to pass the game. If you did, you were treated to some horribly butchered translation that barely qualifies as English. It took me sooooo long to beat this game as a kid. The ending was a HUGE letdown.
GHOSTS & GOBLINS (NES).
OK, anyone who beat Satan in Ghosts n' Goblins knows that you are in for the biggest 'fuck you' Capcom has ever given to gamers. You are told that the entire game you struggled through (and it was really damn hard to get that far) was an ILLUSION and a trap devised by Satan. If you REALLY wanted to save the princess and get to the real ending, then you would have to beat the ENTIRE game again, only THIS TIME, you have to use the absolute WORST weapon (the cross shield) to kill Satan, or you will have to do it all over ANOTHER time. Well fuck you too Capcom. And then what's your reward? Another butchering of the English language: "Congraturation! This story is happy end!"

Re: Short game endings
The Cronicles of Narnia on the DS was a half decent ARPG and the ending scene was just a poxy rerended still image of all the good guys. rubbish.
On the other hand Torrico's (saturn fmv adventure game) went on for ever.

Re: Short game endings
Wow, that sounds a little like Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. That game just doesn't end. It's brutal. I don't remember a satisfying conclusion, but at least some of the final levels were interesting.J T wrote:If you REALLY wanted to save the princess and get to the real ending, then you would have to beat the ENTIRE game again, only THIS TIME, you have to use the absolute WORST weapon (the cross shield) to kill Satan, or you will have to do it all over ANOTHER time.
Mighty Bomb Jack is another impossible game with a horrible, horrible ending. Endless enemies, continues and extra lives are virtually unheard of, no saves or passwords, repetitive gameplay... worst of all, there's a SECRET ending that's PAINFUL to get, and this is your reward:
“KING PAMERA WAS MOVED TO TEARS WITH PLEASURE SEEING IT, JACK FOUND OUT AND SHOUTED ‘FATHER'”
Ugh.
Re: Short game endings
It really depends on the game, but yes, Ghost n' Goblins made me throw my controller in rage.
I hate completing a whole 126 game season in baseball, winning the world series and getting the same ending when you win a single playoff game. Shame on you MLB 2005.
There are a lot of sports games like that too. In Madden you get the trophy, and that is it. Take it back to Madden 94, after you win, you get the trophy, a celebration, and a friggin parade with credits.
TMNT on NES also sucks it big.

I never could pass that game, although I devoted way too much time to trying as a kid. That game was so frustrating, you had to be a masochist to enjoy it. In fact, someone realized this fact and made a game where you play a chubby little lesbian submissive who is forced to play in a mighty bomb jack clone in order to please her mistress. It's called Mighty Jill Off.Flashman85 wrote: Mighty Bomb Jack is another impossible game with a horrible, horrible ending. Re: Short game endings
I remember when I beat aladdin on sega genesis. The ending was so short I questioned whether I had actually beaten the game or done something wrong.
It's just aladdin and jasmine doing a kiss and then credits...I dunno I was sort of expecting more.
A fairly short ending I really liked though was Sonic 2.

Let's not make another thread for this, but shad's post makes me think about alternate game endings, although they might be short, they're different.shadobeni wrote:

When I finished Sonic with all the chaos emeralds for the first time, I was pretty pumped. Sonic 2's ending was even better with the emeralds. Though short, they remain a few of my favorite endings.

Re: Short game endings
The funny part is that a friend of mine showed me that game, saying, "Hey, you like platformers, and this is different, and I can't beat it," and I tried it, and I actually enjoyed the challenge! (Just the challenge--don't judge me! ;p)J T wrote:In fact, someone realized this fact and made a game where you play a chubby little lesbian submissive who is forced to play in a mighty bomb jack clone in order to please her mistress. The difference is that whoever made Mighty Jill Off created a game that actually compliments the unique jumping physics of Mighty Bomb Jack; the level design of the original game was too mundane for the jumping to be anything but a nuisance.
