Re: Nominate Together Retro Games for October and November
Get the Gamecube version of RE. Of course I'm biased, but from what I've read, it's sort of known as the definitive version.

I know little to nothing about Resident Evil. But I do know that the Gamecube rerelease was ported to the Wii in all of its glory. Though I will defer to Ack who is the biggest RE fan I know...

If you're new to the series, I would suggest the remake on the GC. I've heard good things about the Wii, but I can't confirm because I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet. The biggest complaint I hear about the first game(and the first several games in the series, as well as most early survival horror games) is the tank controls, something that was changed for the port to the Gamecube. And controls can make or break your gaming experience.
Unfortunately, some of the magic will be lost by doing this, since you will not be getting the hokey conversations in the original game, the pre-rendered backgrounds, and the old-school 3D graphics on the Saturn and PlayStation. And while the game doesn't change much of the general ideas and many encounters are the same or similar, there are some extra battles in the GC version, specifically anything to do with a Crimson Head. The GC also has self-defense weapons, which make the game considerably easier in my opinion, though visually it's a darker experience to me.
Now if you really want to crank up the camp factor, find the Director's Cut version with the live action intro. It's very difficult to take the game seriously after watching that.

I remember that intro, a friend had the game. I love live action in games, they're so bad they're very entertaining.Ack wrote:Now if you really want to crank up the camp factor, find the Director's Cut version with the live action intro. Searched through my wii backups and found RE Archives, I thought it was another spinoff but its the GC remake. Also found RE deadly silence so I can try that on the DS flash cart. If the game is short enough I could try and play both versions, although I'm not crazy about the DS version and more inclined towards PS1 or Saturn. All this different RE game names make things a bit confusing.

I'd love to see Darkstalkers get some love, but I am pretty damn biased...
