Re: Sony's Most Iconic Game Franchises?
They moved onto new franchises. Naughty Dog went to develop Uncharted series and Insomniac Games started Resistance and Ratchet and Clank series. The Crash and Spyro games were handled by Universal Vivendi after first 3 titles from Insomniac and Naughty Dog.(-_-) wrote:I look at that game sitting on my shelf, and I hate it and love it all at the same time.regularppl wrote:They need to bring back BLASTO,
its been over 10 years already, he is due for a sequel.
And out of curiosity, what exactly happaned to Crash bandicoot and spyro. I know naughty dog made the first three Crash games, and Insomniac the first three ( i think...) Spyro games and then they went to other consoles. And turned into garbage in the process.
Naughty Dog and Spyro's developer Insomniac left Universal Vivendi to work exclusively for Sony leaving Crash and Spyro in the hands of developers who saw them as nothing more than kid's game characters.

Ahn, Killzone?
(By the way, I don't even know why Killzone 2 was such a big deal this time around, I don't remember many people citing the first game as a must have for the PS2.)

Oh, and I don't think any Sony franchises fall into the iconic category. To me, it seems that an icon (at least in videogames) has a significant nostalgia component to it, and the Playstation games aren't that old yet (and I don't know if they are going to be icons when they're old enough -- I mean, I don't imagine Kratos on the same level as a Mario or Sonic; the latter are associated with our childhood, while God of War, no matter how early we played it, will always seem to be a more mature entertainment).
Re: Sony's Most Iconic Game Franchises?
crash bandicoot was like the unofficial psx mascot when it was new
But I think it must be GT or Metal Gear...
PS is most famous for these two

Time Crisis, any of the two Team Ico games are staple sony stuff, ummm Devil May Cry used to be, and i think you could probably say Final Fantasy to some degree

Wait, do 3rd party titles count?

Re: Sony's Most Iconic Game Franchises?
Just to clarify I'm looking not at all console exclusives but a narrower subgroup of games developed or published by Sony themselves. Games by Square, Namco, Konami, Capcom, etc. don't count even if they're often exclusively associated with Sony systems.
Yeah it does seem that sony doesn't have many if any iconic franchises and that their hardware is more what defines that company's video game division. I wonder whether this will hurt them in the long run or has the video game industry changed that you don't really need to have iconic franchises like Sega and Nintendo do.
It seems that Sony's major franchise is Gran Turismo. Others like Hot Shots Golf, Ratchet & Clank and Ape Escape don't quite have the name recognition.
Does anyone think that Sony has any franchises that could reach iconic status? I thought that Parappa could've been one but hasn't really seen much love since its ps1 days.
