Goodbye Nintendo Seal Of Quality...

Post by Mod_Man_Extreme »

Well after 24 years and a name change from the 'Nintendo Seal Of Quality' to just the 'Nintendo Seal' it looks like Nintendo has finally given up in house quality control and formed a new company called the Mario Club to perform all of it's quality control service.

It isn't like the Nintendo Seal has been of much use lately, but it's sad to see that the Nintendo and the game quality issues have gotten so bad that they've given up and formed a new company to deal with it instead.

The company is apparently a Second Party affiliate (Like Hal Enterprises, and Rare before the breakup.) and you can get some more info on it here:

Well, it's not like the 'seal of quality' was ever any indication of quality to begin with.

I don't see this as giving up. Instead I see it more like "yeah we'll try again".

Well Nintendo did a pretty decent job of keeping crappy games off of their systems or in low print runs up until this generation with the Wii and I'll admit the NES also had quite a few stinkers it's heyday.

i never had much regard for the "seal of quality." back in the day, any game, however shitty, could get the seal of quality so long as it played nice with nintendo's bully-boy marketing practices and was sufficiently sanitized of violence, sexuality, or religious references.

anyway, i think this is more corporate reorganization than anything else.

All the Seal of Quality ever really meant was that the company paid Nintendo to make the game for their system, and they didn't include anything that Nintendo found objectionable (though even that was circumvented a couple times). It didn't really have anything to do with the quality of the game at all.

I guess so, but I like to think that Nintendo at least used to try preventing shovelware and crap from ending up on their machines.

You got to remember one persons trash is another personan treasure. Not everbody will agree on what is and what is not shovelware. The Nintendo Seal of Quality was just there so what happened to the Atari would not happen to nintendo. It more of helps from there being to many games and games are manufactured by nintendo. Its nice to have a standard. I liked that all NES, N64, and SNES games looked the same and same packaging. I have Genesis games that are different shapes, sizes, and casing namely the EA games. I hated the way those looked. Stupid yellow tap what is that even for?

But you have to remember that all Geneis games came in hard plastic cases (and later cardboard boxes) all of which were uniform in size and appearance unless you find the switch from Sega's 80's style black and wireframe box art design to their contemporary red stripe design annoying/irritating.

They are not all the same. You must not have many EA games there close but if you have to, use a ruler you'll see the case size difference. Some are taller some skinnier, and of course the inside is different because of the game size difference. I do like hard cases better then cardboard of course, but i also like things uniform. Granted there is a difference in SNES games from '91 and then after. I can upload a picture if you would like.
