Best Imaginary / Fantasy Sports games?
Best Imaginary / Fantasy Sports games?
What are the best sports games you've played that aren't based on any real-life sports or are extremely exaggerated / altered versions of existing sports? (For the moment let's exclude arcade style sports games like NBA Jam or NFL Blitz)
There aren't many out there but one that I remember playing was Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe on the Amiga. It was ported to many other systems including consoles (apparently the genesis/mega drive port is the best compared to the original on Amiga). It was very fun but very difficult. It was sort of futuristic, more violent version of handball where you could hit/tackle any player (you actually scored points when injuring opposing players). You could also upgrade your players stats with equipment upgrades.
I also thought Base Wars on NES was great. The basic baseball rules didn't really change but being able to pick different robots who then fought whenever there was a close call at a base was really fun. It made baseball seem a lot more interesting to me as a kid.

I love Windjammers I hope that counts it is an arcade game. It plays like frisbee pong.
Come to think about it SNK/Neo Geo had a lot of good Fantasy sports games.
Brutal Sports Football on the CD32 and Jaguar is pretty good.
The EA Muntant league games are okay.

To me, it's Cosmic Smash hands-down, simply for taking ancient video gaming concepts and turning them into a fully-realized pseudo-simulation of sorts. The game impressively manages to take an iconic style of gameplay and presentation and reinvent it in a way which feels entirely organic; it moves from Breakout's abstract concept of blocks colliding with one another to a coherent (though highly stylized) sport.

Mutant League series as stated previously.
Dead Ball Zone for Psone
It reminds me of a violent handball type game.
Like speedball
Hopefully bloodbowl is going to be good whenever that comes out.
