video game pet peeves

Post by pepharytheworm »

I saw this topic on another forum and I wanted to see what you guys think. Anything game related goes nows your time to gripe. Get it all out and you will feel better.

Oh I have to many but I will list a few.

1. Game previews were all they show are cutscenes and not gameplay footage.

2. People using hardcore or casual to describe a video game.

3. Multi playing going away in favor of online play. Why cannot there be both.

4. Used game stores uping the price of a game because its a rpg or mario is in the title.

5. Most new rpgs are action oriented instead of turn-based. Why not a balance of both.

6.Too many FPSs. I like a good selection to choose from but sheesh too many just makes the genre stale. like platformers did in the middle 90's.

7. People who only buy a video game consoles to play the newest madden.

8. Too many adult themed games. Again I like variety. A game doesnt have to be bloody or cuss to be fun.

9. People who call all video game consoles playstations, xboxes or nintendos no matter which console they are.

10. People who just join video game forums to sell something and thats it. Basicly the people who will not be reading what I just wrote here. They are too busy seeing if they sold something or posting more goods.

I feel better now. Why dont you give it a try?

1. People calling a Sega Genesis "An old Sega" or an NES "A Nintendo". Bad thing is, I find myself calling these systems this when I purchase them from yardsales as to not confuse the seller by calling it a "Genesis".

2. People calling an SNES (or N64, even a GCN!) an ancient machine.

3. When I'll be buying an oldish game from someone (like a 10 dollar SNES game) and someone (coworker, etc.) else will overhear me asking if I can buy it and come up and tell the seller not to sell it because "I will take it, wait a year or 2, and resell it for like 500 dollars". Then I don't get to buy it.

The New Super Mario Wii is the opposite - multi player, but no online play. Why can't there be both.
4. Used game stores uping the price of a game because its a rpg or mario is in the title.
Same goes for flea market and Craig's List. I hate people who think their games are worth more than they are.
6.Too many FPSs. I like a good selection to choose from but sheesh too many just makes the genre stale. like platformers did in the middle 90's.
Well said!
8. Too many adult themed games. Again I like variety. A game doesnt have to be bloody or cuss to be fun.
You know there is a reason Sonic (the original ones) and Super Mario are so popular.

I have an original one of my own: Intros.
I remember when first popping in a new NES, SNES, or Genesis game and waiting a minute or two to see an intro or game preview. There was something exciting about seeing that before playing the game.

Part of that is hardware limitations. Trying to render 4 different viewpoints at the same time on the same screen can get iffy. I'm sure we'll see both local and online co-op more in the next generation of hardware, but as it stands now you kinda HAVE to go with one or the other.

while i agree with you to an extent, it is supply and demand. I've been wanting to just try out the fatal frame series for a while now, but they are like 35 at gamestop. They arn't mario or rpg (ish). Supply and demand. Here is the thing with video game prices. If people stopped paying X amount of money, companies wouldn't charge it. But you get that rabid fans out there who will spend whatever they can to get a hold of a used Mario game, or an RPG and they kinda set the bar. Coincidentally- in my humble opinion RPG fans and Nintendo fans are the craziest most passionate people out there. Same with metal gear. I've been wanting the twin snakes for the gamecube, but the price is way to high. Metal gear fans. Crazy passionate people.

To each their own. I really don't mind if people buy the newest madden and console as long as they are happy playing video games. Whatever they find fun and whatever gets the console in the house is good as far as i'm concerned. Plus once they have that- they might pop in drakes uncharted once it is 10 or 20 bucks used and give it a spin when they are bored. You don't make new fans by making the same type of game over and over. You get them by meeting them halfway. Madden is kinda... meeting the sports fan halfway.

Funny- I noticed that a lot of your pet peeves about video games are actually pet peeves with the culture and not with games themselves. It isn't an attack or anything, just thought that was a bit odd.

so then your pet peeves are.....
Its half and half some are about video game culture and others about games themselves just mixing it up. I am curious what bothers you about video games though.

I am just trying too have fun thats all. I am not trying to justify my opinons. My list of what I love about video games and the culture would be enough to write a novel. Its nice to get some steam out sometimes though.

On another note with all the money game makers spend to make a game why is there still so many bad voice overs. I would like to see more professional voice over artist in games like Cam Clarke, Rob Paulson, Frank Welker. I know there in some but they could always be in more.

I didn't notice any pet peeves in his reply.

My pet peeves:

1) Excessive trekking over the same terrain for fetch quests.

2) The color red being used to indicate things (I'm red/green colorblind).

3) Games requiring very precise movement through 3-D space with insufficient depth cues. (I'm thinking specifically of the laser tunnel segment of "Conker's Bad Fur Day", though I've encountered it elsewhere as well).

4) Quicktime events in the middle of cutscenes (Sorry, Shenmue).

5) Jumping puzzles in 3-D platformers.

6) Losing my gamesaves on NES cartridges.

Off the top of my head, water levels when swimming controls are done poorly. Zelda is one of few series to do them well.

This one is ancient and it has been extinct since then, many people who grew with PC gaming will know what I am talking about, and that is disk swapping, I've always hated disk swapping especially for games like Under A Killing Moon, you just running around minding your own business by the time you walk in the building there is a message that pops up that said that I have to swap disk. It just puts you out the game, especially that you are just deep into it.

My new pet peeve is Back Tracking, maybe I am just lazy, but I never liked back tracking, it just makes the game feel more like work.

1. Cut scenes that take almost half an hour in the game. Not the end like it should. If I wanted to watch a movie a would have popped in a movie.

2. Lack of originality, I mean there is but so few. It's all about kill these nazi zombies in ww2 of the future. Remember time splitters? boy that was a fun game. Going around as a fish controlling a robotic body throwing bricks at people.

3. Sony (i have a ps1,2,3 i like the games hate the company)

4. Peripherals (everything seems like it needs a new peripheral) Maybe it's just me but what ever happened to having a controller and just playing. Some are cool like light guns, guitars, drums, and mics. Then there are the dumb ones: yoga matte, project natal, eyetoy. And they are soooo expensive.

5. (insert sports game with the year here) Do I need to say anything here?

I agree with trekking over and over again on fetch quest. Donkey Kong 64 was the worst at fetch quest. you had to do the same level 5 times each time with a different character to get everything. I havent yet lost a Nes game save. Do you hold rest as you turn the system off?
