Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
It probably depends on the game really. I'd might go for CRT for 2D games, but most of the time would vote for LCD -- which is what I use most of the time.
I guess I'd have to do some side-by-side to really have a good clue, but I just ditched my last CRT monitor and my TVs don't have VGA.

Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
My TV only has one VGA input, which my PC prioritizes to. If it weren't for that, I'd get a VGA box and my answer to this question would be...
LCD
LCD
Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
I'd say most games look better on a quality CRT. I have my DC hooked up to my lcd just for space reasons and of course it still looks great...just not quite as vibrant as a nice tube.
Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
Are we allowed to use upscalers or not? If we can, I would argue that a huge LCD screen with the Dreamcast video properly upscaled would beat out a 36" CRT. The only advantage CRT has over LCD is light gun support imo. Well, that and there is no input lag.
Actually, how about both? Have an old CRT around for light gun games or for consoles that are difficult/impossible to get high quality connections for. And have a nice big LCD HDTV for everything else.

Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
CRT hands down, I just got my VGA box today (Thanks Racket, it works great!) and find it to look fantastic on my CRT PC Monitor. When it comes to LCD's I find refresh rates, black levels, color depth and pretty much everything else to suck when compared to a CRT after taking five minutes to calibrate it.
Also you may want to rephrase the question as people may get confused and might think you mean a Standard Definition CRT TV instead of a CRT PC Monitor which is what I use my Dreamcast on.

Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
Why would anyone think an LCD would look better. Upscalers or not CRT would have the clearest most vibrant colors. I have a 32" CRT SDTV, a 42" widescreen CRT HDTV, and a 48" LCD HDTV. Everything looks the best on 42" crt except Blu-ray movies but thats because I can crank up the hrtz to 120.
Where's my chippy? There's my chippy.

Come visit me and check out my setup, and then tell me again what you think. I've been playing Shining Force III on my 52" LCD HDTV with an RGB cable, upscaled to 1600X1200 and it looks absolutely fantastic.

I don't have space for the CRT unfortunately and my 19" Dell LCD is the only thing in the house that would be convienient to hook the DC up to. Hope it doesn't look that bad. CRT's are the best though.

Re: Dreamcast VGA: CRT vs. LCD
I have mine connected to a 36" Gateway Destination CRT. It only runs at 800x600 but it still looks fantastic. I imagine that someday something will go wrong with the monitor and when that happens it may be difficult (and expensive) to find someone who can fix it, but it will probably still be worth it.
I much prefer CRTs. I just wish they were more readily available.
