Recording music from speakers

Post by Incognito D »

I want to rip a game's soundtrack by downloading the rom, playing it on my PC and recording the BGM as I play.
What's the best free program to go about doing this?

You can set windows to record sound from the stereo mix (in sounds and audio devices properties, click audio tab, sound recording volume, and check stereo mix), and use sound record (start->run->sndrec32) to record any sound coming through your pcs sound card.

Some emulators have built-in tools for recording game music. What ROM are you trying to record? Depending on the system, we might be able to find you an emulator with those built-in tools. Check Zophar's domain for info on that kind of stuff.

I don't recommend using a full game emulator unless there's no other way; It's usually hard to isolate just the music without sound effects when you do that. Here's info on where to download game soundtracks as small files that contain only the music in the original system's format. With them you can record the songs sequentially with correct looping intact, and usually more accurate sound emulation.

You can try "Multiquence" by Goldwave and set the recording source to the speaker output. I've used it for everything from prank calling to recording music. Best of all.. it's free!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm using Project 64 and it can record straight from the rom, so job done. 8)
