Dodonpachi was clearly poorly programmed in the Saturn port. There's no really good reason the Saturn couldn't have replicated it in nearly arcade perfect form. Hell, look at Battle Garegga.

Mine was 980 yen at GEO. You can find it if you look.
Haha, I still need to find a GEO that carries Saturn games!!!

I know it's out there, and I do look. Donpachi cost me about 500yen at Momotaro. Heck, I even found Guardian Heroes there for 780yen I think it was.

DDP on Saturn suck? Really?? I don't think so. Especially when you play in TATE, it's very enjoyable. But this is just my opinion. I've had the SS port for years, and I have to play it every once in a while. I do hear the PS1 port is superior, though.

I would really love to know the differences.

I'm seriously considering drawing a line and choosing either ps1 or saturn right now (im moving into a studio, read closet, apartment)

If you're really stuck for space but have some money to burn, get a Japanese PS2 or even a PS3 (20 or 60GB version, of course!) and the PS1 version of DDP.

The Saturn version is quite a bit cheaper; $15-30 vs. $40-60.

From what I understand, the Saturn port is more accurate in terms of gameplay, while the PlayStation port is the better looking of the two. I wouldn't know anything about arcade accuracy and I only own the Saturn version, so take that with a grain of salt.

I have both game and I am using SCART connection for both, linked to XRGB-2+ to a CRT monitor, played in TATE mode only. So here's what I can tell.

Saturn has an extra stage and you can choose the different ship at the ship selection part. Second player can play as different ship. Graphics is not as bright and clear as PS1 version. Loading time isn't very long. I heard it is not arcade perfect or accurate, though game play does preserve some of the slowdowns. Costs around 30-50 dollars for a complete copy.

PS1 has no extra stage and you have to choose the different ship in the option menu. Second player will have to play the same kind of ship as first player. Graphics is really nice and bright and more accurate to the arcade. You can tell the difference between Saturn and PS1, trust me. Has a bit of loading time every time each stage starts. Slowdowns in arcade is not the same or is lacking. There is an option to push a button to have slowdown during the game. Costs around 80-120 dollars for a complete copy.

If you are not a shmups expert and is just playing for fun, then I think the Saturn version is fine. If you want the best graphics and have the money, then I recommend PS1 version over Saturn any day of the week.

it is not *that bad*, neither is it arcade perfect. if youd never seen or played arcade Dodonpachi, youd find Saturn DDP perfectly playable and enjoyable.
