Dragon Warrior on the NES for me, too.

I was at a cousin's house during the summer. I was about 9 or 10 when it was distributed to NP subscribers and everyone had one. I guess I didn't get NP at that time, because I never owned it.

My cousin showed me how it worked. I was wondering around this town going "Where are the enemies?" Well you're in the town. Go outside. "What is this?" It's the world, dude, it's huge. "Whoa."

So I kill a few enemies. Using menus was weird but I caught on. Then this music popped up. I was now at Level 2. "Level? What level? Where is it?" No, YOU are Level 2. You power up over time while the world stays the same. "Fuuuuuuuuuuuu..."

Mind blown. That was a total revelation for me! RPGs became my fave genre in the 16 bit era.

Pokemon Blue! 4th grade I believe, so that is somewhere in 1998 or 1999. What a great game. I never got into anything past Red or Blue. I picked up Fire Red just for the large amount of awesome it contains.

The first RPG I ever played was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I first played it in 2006 after getting an original Xbox for Christmas. After playing that game, I loved the gameplay so much I bought the sequel and other games of its type after.

Dragon Warrior on the NES was my first, and I believe it was also the first RPG available on a home console

Dragon Warrior is predated by Dragon Stomper for the Atari 2600 (with Supercharger). There were also the AD&D games for the intellivision mentioned earlier. Both date to 1982. Dragon Warrior is of course still a great title.

I was more into sonic, streets of rage and street fighter 2: special champion's ed at the time. RPGs just didn't appeal to me. They seemed very hard to pick up and figure out how to play.

Then I rented Phantasy Star 4. Despite the frustration of not knowing how to play the game (I didn't know what hp and mp meant or anything about stats and leveling up), I actually liked it, probably because of the story. It opened the door to final fantasy 7 which was the first rpg I beat. So I credit those two games with making a genre which seemed completely alien and inaccessible to me into something I could actually play. Although ironically I don't necessarily think those games hold up that well today.

first rpg was final fantasy 3 on snes or Final Fantasy VI proper. I played Zelda: A link to the past first, but I really don't consider that an RPG. Anyway, that still is the best and favorite RPG of all time. Don't if it is bc it was my first time (always special when it's your first time =P) or it is a great game on its own.

My first RPG I ever played, or attempted to play, was Final Fantasy II on the SNES. I rented it from the video store when I was around seven or eight, and since I had never played anything like an RPG before then, I had absolutely no idea what to do. I walked around a building for about an hour talking to people before I finally gave up.

Not too long after that I rented Chrono Trigger from the same video store, and luckily I was a bit older and smarter so could I actually played through to the end. I remember begging my parents to let me re-rent it so that I could finish it through. They didn't understand, I had to save time itself!

Fatal Labyrinth for the genesis. At the time (I was maybe about 8 or so) I absolutely hated it. It had simple graphics and it was hard when not knowing all the mechanics. About 2 months ago I bought a complete copy off eBay to give it another shot. Loved it a lot more this time, the game has 1 music track that's very catchy albeit repetitious music.

The first RPG I had ever played was the original Bard's Tale on my Apple IIGS. I was around 4 years old at the time, so the game was incredibly far above my understanding. I spent the majority of my time wandering the streets in the day, and going to the inn at night so as to avoid any fights and would relentlessly find the temple so I could hear the monks do the chant from Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.

First RPG I played was on a C64. I can't remember the name, but you could walk around the wilderness, visit downs, buy boats, travel the seas, enter grottos and you could steal and kill people (which would shut down the city / grotto you were in while the local security tried to capture you). It was pretty involved, I was only 10, so I played with my cousin who was 14, who introduced me to the game. Does anyone have any idea what that game was called?
