I'm highly interested in what will come of this announcement. Will it finally shut up the internet about Sonic being better in 2D? Who knows. I'll probably like it either way.

Re: New 2d sonic game...
This is going to suck. Why? Because Sonic Rush 1 & 2 sucked. Why?
because sonic team thinks people got into sonic only for the freaking speed. If I wanted absolute speed, I'd play an arcade racing game. Sonic was first an excellent platform game, and THEN a game about speed.
Yeah the speed was the main bullet point behind the marketing blitz of the early 90s, but really if the platforming was crap, and all you did was run fast fast fast, and let the game play itself (like the rush games) then it would have been a failure.
But seeing the 2D parts of sonic unleashed, it seams sega doesn't know that. Plus the emphasis on speed in the trailer only means that sega will make the same mistake again.

Sonic Rush 1 (I haven't played 2) was a good game (not necessarily a great game) IMO. They are certainly not extremely high quality classics like the older games are.ZeroAX wrote:This is going to suck. Why? Because Sonic Rush 1 & 2 sucked. Why?
I know what you are talking about with the speed emphasis - in particular Sonic 1 wasn't THAT fast, at least not consistently.
Part of the problems with Rush (and the GBA games) is that they make the levels such that you want to (and sometimes have to) rush through it as fast as you can, and then throw some nasty crap (worse of all are the pits). That isn't good level design IMO, but the gameplay in the games is almost spot on (and they have to vary a bit as well). Fortunately the crappiest parts of level design are not that prevalent in the entirety of the games.
Rush innovation to the gameplay is IMO rather clever as you can use the boost bar to keep you invulnerable to enemies in short bursts, so that at least lets you keep on running when you face misplaced enemies (the pits still suck). The Sonic 2 style bonus levels were also very cool.
Ivo.

Ideal scenario: New 2D Sonic comes out, is a great game, everyone buys it, SEGA are reborn into SEGA of old.... and make a new Jet Set Radio and Shenmue 3 (had to get it in there)

Don't you mean gold? Oh, wait...Peffico wrote:I'm just gonna go out and say it's gonna suck. Maybe they will have them talk to fish (ala aquaman) yep that would suck. Good stuff. ANd then they will add ohhh a bla.... i mean whi... i mean yell.. i mean green, that's it green hedgehog.
And then some b.s. back story no one cares about. That is my prediction.
(so that way if it isn't shit I will be happy)
Well, what about a robot? Oh, right...
Well how about this? Sonic is replaced by a bunch of weird little cousins, all in different colors, who form a rock band and are trying to find their dead mother?
Oh, wait...crap, this is harder than I thought.

now on sonic rush, yeah they were not the most horrible video games, but compared to sonic advance 1, and the great mega drive trilogy, they can't even compare.

Re: New 2d sonic game...
I played Rush recently and Sonic Advance 1 some 3 years ago. I don't think Rush was worse, it may even be better? They both have rail grinding and tricks (something that is actually fun, but I would prefer would show up in a different game rather than in Sonic). Rush has the 3D bosses which are generally worse. The bonus levels in Rush I certainly preferred by a lot though. All in all, certainly comparable as far as my impressions go.ZeroAX wrote:now on sonic rush, yeah they were not the most horrible video games, but compared to sonic advance 1, and the great mega drive trilogy, they can't even compare.
I'm not trying to pick a fight here and I'm genuinely interested in the opinions of other fans that have played the Advance games and Rush (it blends a bit together, but I'm fairly sure I haven't played Advance 3 yet - I should get around to doing that eventually).
They can't compare to the Mega Drive ones though, those have in general much higher quality in level design and other stuff (even if the "feel" of Sonic's handling is fairly accurate in the newer 2D ones, I think - if we neglect the new tricks).

Also, I really hope this game is good. They haven't made a really good Sonic game in 8 years now.
