1st gen (60Gb) had hardware based BC - they all have the PS2 'emotion' chip built in. 2nd gen and subsequent have software based BC. Not sure if the slim or more recent consoles have any BC at all... Generally hardware based is more reliable, but my 1st gen has a problem with some games (well, only 1 so far, but I'm sure it's not an isolated occurrence.)

And you can swap out the hard drive for a larger one, right?

That's correct. The first model of the PS3 actually "does everything". Don't let the PS3 Slim's false advertising campaign fool you.gtmtnbiker wrote:And you can swap out the hard drive for a larger one, right?

I really like my 60gb model. The only complaint I have is that it's hot and the fan is loud as hell. People complain about the 360's noise, but I can tell you my first 360 bought in 2007 was not as loud as my PS3 is (fan or disc drive) and my new 360 is much cooler and pretty quiet, actually.

Subsequent PS3 models do not have BC. 60GB/20GB have full hardware PS2 BC, and some 80GB have hardware/software mix PS2 BC.2nd gen and subsequent have software based BC. Not sure if the slim or more recent consoles have any BC at all...

Is the PS3 noise that commonplace?RadarScope1 wrote:I really like my 60gb model. The only complaint I have is that it's hot and the fan is loud as hell. I was under the understanding it was semi-quiet...

I've never had a problem with my 60 GB's noise level - my 360 is much worse

No idea how common it is. I just know mine gets pretty loud. I keep mine horizontal. If positioned upright, the exit point for the air would be at the top -- chimney-style. That might help. I also have it in an entertainment center with no real air vents in the back, so it's enclosed on three sides, but I keep the machine to the far left in order to give the air vent about 6 inches of clearance. It usually doesn't start out loud, it gets that way after it's on for a bit.racketboy wrote:Is the PS3 noise that commonplace?RadarScope1 wrote:I really like my 60gb model. Honestly it's not a big deal, but I just always see people talk about it with the 360 when in my experience the PS3 is just as loud. There's a lot of horsepower in both of those little boxes.
