Re: Who digs giant robots?
Gundam FTW! seriously who doesn't like Gundams that likes giant robots, come one show some love for the most awesome and long lasting japanese mech series ever!
But then again I spent maybe close a 1000 hours on armored core nexus, because armored core is the ultimate mech rpg game series period.

The gates of Hell,
"Through me is the way into the woeful city; through me is the way into eternal woe; through me is the way among the lost people. Justice moved my lofty maker: the divine Power, the supreme Wisdom and the primal Love made me. Before me were no things created, unless eternal, and I eternal last. Leave every hope, ye who enter!" -Dante

Mechs are not robots - I don't even watch Gundam (and I wouldn't be surprised if there were also giant robots in the series).nemesis90 wrote:Gundam FTW! seriously who doesn't like Gundams that likes giant robots, come one show some love for the most awesome and long lasting japanese mech series ever!![]()

I distinctly remember a japanese friend of mine - she was saying this:
Quote: I have a friend who is really into Gundam. Whenever I say something about the robots, he goes "No no, not Robots - mobile suits!"
I found it so funny
Re: Who digs giant robots?
Did someone say Gundam?

Re: Who digs giant robots?
So what's the difference between robots, androids, mechs, cyborgs and armoured suits/units?
Also, Grendizer>Gundam and that's FACT!

Re: Who digs giant robots?
Most of this is fiction terminology of course.Pulsar_t wrote:So what's the difference between robots, androids, mechs, cyborgs and armoured suits/units?

Cyborgs are living beings with some "robotic" parts added (think Robocop, or Jax from Mortal Kombat). If you ever used braces, you could perhaps say you were a cyborg
Androids are robots in the form of humans (think Terminator or C3P0 from Star Wars).
Robots in general don't need to be human shaped (think Rob, from Nintendo, R2D2 from Star Wars, or any of many industrial application robotic arms and so on).
Mechs are just large vehicles, usually piloted by just one person - it's like a tank, but it tends to have this bi-pedal shape instead. They call Mobile Suits to the Gundam ones, it is just a different term I don't think there is any critical difference.
There are "human-sized" armoured suits (think Iron Man) that are essentially the same as mechs but different size.
Re: Who digs giant robots?
Essentially the difference between mechs and robots is that robots are autonomous and mechs are not.Pulsar_t wrote:So what's the difference between robots, androids, mechs, cyborgs and armoured suits/units?

I'll add to that.MrPopo wrote:Essentially the difference between mechs and robots is that robots are autonomous and mechs are not.Pulsar_t wrote:So what's the difference between robots, androids, mechs, cyborgs and armoured suits/units?

Robots: a virtual or mechanical artificial agent
Android: a robot designed to resemble and act like a human
Mech: a walking vehicle controlled by a pilot
Cyborg: an organism that has both artificial and natural systems
Armored Suit: a mechanical suit designed to provide armor and potentially increase natural abilities
Re: Who digs giant robots?
Umm I wasn't asking seriously but thanks for the answers anyhow!
Let's see if I get my examples right though!
Android: Lt. Data
Mech: Battletech universe
Armoured suit: Bubblegum Crisis
Cyborg: Universal Soldier
Robot: Well it is too generic but I think Metal Gear (from Snatcher) qualifies
What are replicants though? They are built like humans albeit with enhanced powers. Are they androids?
And speaking of Gundam what is the best series? I admit my ignorance when it comes to Gundam.. Though at one point I had the Dreamcast game but never bothered to finish it.
