I just got a Sega Game Gear from Ebay (really cheap) but unluckily it doesn't work. Whenever I power it on the scree flashes the Sega logo and then the whole console powers down. Occasionally it makes it as far as the title screen of a game but usually it lasts about 1 second. The same thing happens with and without a game plugged in and both with the mains supply and batteries. For the second it stays on the screen is not very clear (dark despite messing with the Brightness control). I know that the Game Gears suffer from bad capacitors but I am not sure if that is the problem in my case. Changing the capacitors is something I can handle but I don't want to invest more time and money if it's unlikely to be the cause.
Any ideas?

My bet would be on the capacitors as well. Had 3 in a lot I also got from ebay and the worse one had the same shut off problem as yours did. Put some new caps in and fixed the problem.

I just fixed a friend's Game Gear this weekend that was acting the same way as your description by replacing all the caps. The parts are cheap and it only takes a few minutes if you know what you are doing.

Re: Sega Game gear problem
I found these 2 guides and plan to revive my 'dead' and 'mostly working' GGs once I take the time to order parts.

Thanks everyone. Any ideas for online places to buy the caps (must ship to Europe).
