Absolute Must Have Games

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I thought of putting Alien Crush or Devil Crash (get it right! :P ) on there, but I don't really consider them absolute must haves. Maybe "should haves."
Oh its, Yu Suzuki, not Yuji Naka
SH!T! You're absolutely right. The giant Yu Suzuki signature in the Shenmue manual should've been a clue to me...
You guys do realize that this is purely subjective to each individual? We all have our favorites that we simply couldn't be without on each console.
I don't think they realize that... Some guys are pretty thick. Like the guy who left out Doom, Quake or Wolfienstein 3D from his PC list:
How could you have a PC list without quake or doom though, diablo 2 I can agree...but to me doom and quake opened the doors wide for me.
What a crazy guy!!!

I think it's pretty interesting to see what others think are "must haves" on different consoles. I think that Super Metroid is awesome, and Donkey Kong Country is pretty good, but I don't think either are must haves. Super Metroid... too long and confusing (yet I had Metroid on my NES list; go figure...) and DKC never really did it for me. I have played through it, but it was just another platformer for me when I was more interested in the 3DO, Saturn and Playstation at the time. I also think I tend to value games that came out around the time the console was first released high then later games. I'm not sure why. Nostalgia from pre-release system hype, probably.

My Must Play List (limited to systems I actually owned at one point)

NES

World Class Track Meet (with the powerpad peripheral)
Super Dodgeball
Donkey Kong Jr [close call between this and the other donkey kong arcade ports]
Excitebike

Gameboy (Color)

Super Mario Land
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Genesis

Sonic 2
Earthworm Jim 2 [first is also excellent]
Streets of Rage 2
Phantasy Star IV
Contra Hard Corps
NBA Jam TE

Playstation 1

Metal Gear Solid [didn't like the story and actually prefer the gameplay in VR Missions]
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee [never played the sequel but it's apparently better]
Spyro the Dragon [apparently the 3rd one is the best but never played it]
Final Fantasy IX [close call between this and xii]

Playstation 2

Sly Cooper 2: Band of Thieves
Shadow of Colossus
Yakuza 2
Klonoa 2
Tekken 5 [at least until the new one comes out unless it sucks]
Time Crisis 3 (with guncon2 peripheral, close call with the 2nd game which allowed you to unlock a 2 gun mode)

PC

No One Lives Forever
Max Payne [sequel is also great, really tough call]
Mafia
Grim Fandango

Amiga: Lemmings

Games I would've added if they didn't have better versions that existed.

NES: Punchout, Tetris
N64: NFL Blitz
PS2: Soul Calibur 2, Winning Eleven 9, Guitar Hero 2
PC: Sim City 2000, Age of Empires

Runner Ups

NES: Double Dragon 2, Twinbee, Balloon Fight, Circus Charlie, Mario Bros, Snake Rattle & Roll, Rollergames

Genesis: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Cyborg Justice, General Chaos, Golden Axe

SNES: Mortal Kombat II, Killer Instinct, Joe & Mac

PS1: Chrono Cross, Dino Crisis, Umjammer Lammy, Pong, Hot Shots Golf

PS2: Okami, Onimusha 3, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil 4

PC: Worms: Armageddon, Blade Runner, Castles II, The Incredible Machine

Amiga: Legend of Kyrandia, Speedball 2, Monkey Island 2, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Sim Ant, Megaball, Prince of Persia, Defender of the Crown

Well, I was trying to go for games which transcend subjectivity. Games which are accessible, yet satisfying for hardcore gamers. Iconic games which were huge deals back in the day, but moreover have held up well over time; the sorts of games which appear on Racket's "Defining Games" lists.

That's pretty much what I was going for, to be honest.
