So my Xbox RROD finally

Post by PGchris »

I don't know if anyone remembers but not even a week ago I bragged on here how I had never had any console die on me, "not even my Xbox 360." Well karma is a bitch and look where I am now, I was wondering if you guys could just point me in the right direction on how best to fix this I think I might still be under warranty but I dunno if I have the original box. To be honest I dont really know where to start should I just call in?

I would definitely check online to see if you're still under warranty, that way you can get it repaired for free. I dont think you really need the original box.

I'm hoping you bought it from Cost Co. They have the best return policy in the world. I took my box there after it RRODed on me and they didn't even ask any questions. "My xbox doesn't work" "Ok we'll just put credit on a card for you to use." I got it from there when it first came out so it cost like 500 bucks total. So with the 500 I upgraded to an Elite and got a few free games too. Anyways, tangent. I hope you bought it from there, otherwise I'm not sure what to tell you. Sorry mang.

Well if you can't return it and don't want to pay to have it repaired you could try repairing it yourself.

Heres a couple of youtube guides that show you how.. Doesnt seem to hard if it actually works for you.

I literally just called microsoft support for a disc reading error yesterday. It's very simple, you don't need the original box at all. They'll ask you for your 360's serial number (located on the back, above the usb inputs) and with that they can check if it's still under warranty. You can even check yourself online with the serial number at their website. With RRoD you get a 3 year warranty I believe. So the chances are good you'll still have a warranty for that. If you chose to get it repaired, they can email you a shipping label for UPS. You just print it out, tape it to a shipping box with your 360 inside (remove everything, hard drive, cables, custom faceplates etc) and give it to UPS. You'll get a fixed 360 back within 2-3 weeks.

Here's how you fix the problem.

You go to your local electronics retailer and buy a PS3.

I went through this lesson four (4) times before I finally wised up.

Microsoft really screwed the pooch on this generation, which is a shame, because their game library is amazing and their marketplace peerless.

Very funny, but definately not a solution :-P Just an alternative. I do agree, buying a ps3 has become much more lucrative.... after heavy rain, gt5 and demons soul comes out ill probably plunk down the cash... esp since the price drop!

But anyways, if your box is out of warranty and you are handy at taking things apart, all it needs is to replace the thermal paste on the gpu, and replacing the x-clamp with 4 bolts and a few washers. We do em here at my game store all the time, fixes about 95% of he xboxs we get in.

Call MS. While product replacement plans like the ones Best Buy is always trying to push on you are usually worthless and a waste of money, I would recommend getting one when buying a 360. When mine recently RROD'd I waited until the price drop and got a 60gb Pro along with two games and $40 worth of MS points -- all for nothing (except the $60 I paid at the time. The PRP are now $80 for the 360, tho....)
