DC: do I need a VGA Box or can I just use the VGA cable?
I noticed on the store there is the VGA box and the DC VGA cable. So which do I buy if I want to hook it up to my monitor?

Both.
The only difference is that the VGA cable will only give you VGA and audio out while the VGA Box will give you VGA, Audio, AV and S-Video out instead of the VGA cable's limited output to only VGA.

Either one well work! The VGA box also has the option to use S-Video or Composite.
Life is as good as your game!

Also make sure your monitor can either support VGA or is a CRT to get a good clean picture from your Dreamcast.

Well considering my Dell monitor doesnt have Composite or Svidio and I have PC speakers, as well as the fact I have regular composite cables already which would be the better choice.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Both.

Well do you regularly take your Dreamcast anywhere?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Well considering my Dell monitor doesnt have Composite or Svidio and I have PC speakers, as well as the fact I have regular composite cables already which would be the better choice.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Both.

If so get the box, that way if the place you're going to has an HDTV with either a VGA/PC port on the back then you'll be able to play your DC in high-def. or if they've only got an old standard-def. set you'll be able to hook it up in either AV or S-Video all form one convenient box.
Also the AV audio out should still work even if you're using the VGA out (VGA out has it's own audio out via a PC headphone style speaker jack) making hooking your DC's audio up to a stereo via it's own set of audio cables a breeze.

I never take my consoles with me. Since the VGA cable has its own PC headphone audio out I should be good. I am a little disappointed that Dino Crisis doesnt support VGA though, oh well, small price to pay for all the other great VGA capable games.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Well do you regularly take your Dreamcast anywhere?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Well considering my Dell monitor doesnt have Composite or Svideo and I have PC speakers, as well as the fact I have regular composite cables already which would be the better choice.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Both.

There's a few workarounds but in the end all DC games are VGA compatible, including the lightgun games if you have a CRT monitor and DC lightgun.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I never take my consoles with me, I only will take emulators if I must. Also that PC headphone audio out has no audio dial as it was meat to out put at a line volume for speaker use.

Yup, that or just any plain old headphone jack to Audio Jack cable will work as well.
