Need some help with color for Goomba GBC emulator

Post by gtmtnbiker »

I'm trying to run Link's Awakening DX on my GBA SP+ using the Goomba Color 2.1. I took the *.gba image and added the Link's Awakening Rom. It runs fine but the colors are off. It's not as rich as this image:

It's like only 4 colors are used. For instance, in the above picture, I see red spots on the eggs and the sky is blue. On my GBA, they're both green.

If I take the *.gba image and run it in Visual Boy Advance, I see the colors that I want. It's like there's a larger palette. I tried switching the different palette within Goomba but I don't see that many colors on the screen.

I wish I could find my original Link's Awakening DX cartridge because I could have sworn that it had colors similar to what I see in Visual Boy Advance. Does anyone else have the same problem? Thanks!

I know Link's Awakening is one of the dual carts that could work on the original Gameboy or the Gameboy Color. What you're describing sounds like your GBA is playing it in Gameboy mode. I'm not familiar with Goomba Color, but I'd look and see if there is some kind of option you can toggle that would tell it to always play as a Gameboy Color game.

The screenshot you posted is what a Link's Awakening DX cart should look like on a GBA SP. I just tried out mine to be sure.

Go into the internal menu (L&R), choose Other Settings -> and change the bottom option - Game Boy: to GBA, then press B, and select the bottom menu option - Restart.

For a more authentic GBC palette (washed-out/greyish), choose GBC instead of GBA.

I did try the Other Settings, bottom option. It shows GameBoy: DMG which I think means Dual Mode Game. I'm unable to select that option. I can select any of the options above it but it skips over this one.

I tried this on two different flash carts.

According to this thread at pocketheaven.com, DMG is the code name for the original gameboy. So that explains the problem I'm having. So the question remains how I can force it to be GBC? I may just have to post over at the Goomba forums on pocketheaven.com.

MGB = Gameboy Pocket.
CGB = Gameboy Color.
AGB = Gameboy Advance (Atlantis Gameboy).
NTR = Nintendo DS (Nitro).
DOL = Game Cube (Dolphin).

Ok, I figured out my problem. The issue was using the M3 Game Manager to create the *.gba file. It has an older version of Goomba which I had replaced with 2.1. But it somehow created the *.gba file with GB mode, not GBC.

I created my own by copying the goomba.gba with the rom and that works fine.

Thanks for the help.

Actually, that wasn't my problem. The problem was using Goomba (gameboy emulator) instead of Goomba Color. I got the downloads from Zophar's website and on the same page, they mixed the two together. The most recent one was Goomba Color. The older version (2.1) was Goomba.

Aargh!

The other issue is that it appears Goomba Color does not support save states which is something I really wanted. I guess I might have to end up using MasterBoy on PSP for this.
