Amiga CD32?

Post by fast »

An acquaintance of mine is trying to sell me his Amiga CD32. And apart from the Alien Breed series and Banshee I am not very familiar with the console (understandably it never received a US release). Any of yall with experience with the console know of any must haves or just interesting titles? 2 player/coop specifically.

He wants $60 loose, which looks to be about the normal price for it.

Its hard to say the system didnt have but maybe three original titles. the rest are ports.
But I would say it has the best version of syndicate I have played on a console. One of the original games is dangerous streets it is 2 players it is not that good though it came with the system when it came out. Some games you cant play in ntsc regions nick falodos golf is one of them it covers up the gauges on the bottom. Stay away from battletoads worst version ever. Oscar. Diggers and Worms are my favorite games on the system. But I would say this system has the best pc ports I have played much better then the 3DO. If you dont have a Jaguar it has Brutal sports football and Zool 2. It also plays Amiga CDTV games but I never tried any of those so I could not tell you.

$60 dollars is a good price for the system. Is it ntsc version or pal? If you got a commodore moniter It doesnt matter. You will need a mouse though thats the only way to change if it will read ntsc or pal games. What controller is it coming with the standard or pro?
Where's my chippy? There's my chippy.

Most of the games are ports from the floppy disc versions, who don't use the extra buttons of the gamepad.

If you don't have an Amiga it is probably worth it for that price. As Arion says, you can get compilation discs that take a lot of hassle out of playing classic Amiga games - I haven't tried those yet, but its bound to be cooler than just emulating the stuff on a PC.

There are still a handful of classics that are probably best experienced on Amiga, some of them having their best versions for the CD32 (mostly due to the higher audio quality, not having to swap out floppies). Even if there are A500 / A1200 or even native PC versions (or ports) of them with very, very few exceptions.

Thanks fellas. If he can find his second controller Im going to do it. I know you can just use any DB9 controller, but if waiting a week or so equals free controller, Ill wait the week.

Sadly my Amiga broke back in the 90s and we foolishly threw it out. So those compilation disc may come my way in the very near future.

As you had a floppy-based Amiga (and no longer do), then I think you will have some nostalgia from playing the games on the CD32 - I think you won't regret getting the CD32 (although of course it won't make the same sound as the floppy drive; I think it is really cool that WinUAE actually has an option for making the floppy drive sound, and it is reasonably authentic). The CD32 is less bulky if you are just playing games (granted some games used the keyboard, so...), and the CD drive is bound to be more durable. The joypad isn't very durable but I actually prefer them to the joysticks, and I think you can use a Megadrive pad for most games anyway (those that only use one button).
