These DS Games are selling poorly. WHY!?

Post by casterofdreams »

Out of the article, the two games for the DS I'm referring to are Knights in the Knightmare and SMT Devil Survivor. Both sold fewer that 35,000 and around 40,000 copies respectively. It seems that the current gaming market is no longer interested in either these types of titles or new IPs all together. Granted they have not been out long but still thats plenty of time to raise numbers. The thing that gets me angry really is the fact that crappy titles with big names outsell these two games 9 to 1. Ohh well, I've got 'em so I'll be happy and you all be sad for playing the same style of games *cough* FPS/TPS*cough*. Note: this is a rant and is not directed at any individual. Opinions are welcomed.

I've got SMT Devil Survivor and I love it! I've been playing it every night before bed. Killing demons with demons always helps me sleep.

Go out and pick up this game, and while you are there, pick up Devil Summoner 2 also. Don't let the Shin Megami Tensei series die here in America!

Don't forget, Atlus tends to be a niche publisher that doesn't print a lot of copies of their games. 40,000 units is a somewhat meaningless statistic without a total printed statistic. Plus, KitN is not exactly even approaching being a mainstream title. SRPG+Bullet Hell makes for fun gameplay, but most people are confused by any attempts at describing it.

Man, Conduit actually looks pretty cool. Perhaps I should dust the Wii off?

That's why I try to buy the "niche" games new (IE Shin Megami Tensei games) so that the company will continue to make such original games of high caliber.

Really, you can hardly say BlazBlue and, say, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite were "overlooked". I'd bet they sold what was expected (I doubt Capcom's management thought they would sell 3 million copies of MH in the US).

BlazBlue sold more than a hundred thousand copies. I think that would qualify as a success for such a niche title.

If you think SMT titles sell badly in the US, you probably don't know their sales figures in Japan. Persona 3 sold roughly 200,000 copies, while Persona 4 moved about 400,000. They're not mega hits, although they surely are successful games.

So I finished The Conduit not too long ago. It's a pretty decent shooter, though it really doesn't do anything "new". A few of the later weapons are very satisfying, though, and it really shows just how awesome you can get the Wiimote going for an FPS if you take the time to do it right (it's even better than MP3 and Trilogy).

Yeah they are for the US only due to the invovlement of the NDP. I know it's niche so no aurgument there but still, I'm still mad *shakes fist*.

Only? Wow, P3 even got an anime series and it only sold 200K units?

I should try KiTN one day, I hope it arrives to Spain.

So are Activision Blizzard evil or is the mainstream to blame for buying into the sequel frenzies, and practically giving "evil" publishers a carte blanche more excuses to keep pumping out sequels, whilst the lesser fortunate developer houses―whose products are labeled niche and therefore comfortably ignored―are foresaken in the process?

I truly wonder how many more dev studios 7th gen will claim.
