HA! I came here to say the same thing that PhilExile recently posted.
I have a 42" Plasma Panasonic which only accepts HDMI, RCA video, S-video and component... but no VGA!
I cried, I panicked, I regretted my purchase and then discovered the monoprice converter box. It works great! $40 and my tears are gone!
EDIT: the key is to use a converter box that runs on external power. A straight up VGA to HDMI cable will not work.

And there are some games that aren't VGA compatible, but those should be fine (I can't review the list at work)
Does it actually give you a "VGA mode" error on those games?
I don't exactly know if all VGA games run at the same resolution, all the games I was able to get running were in 720 x 480 widescreen. From my research, it appears that Blitz and 18 Wheeler are VGA compatible, but I'd have to look at the cases when I get home to be sure. You think it's worth it to try a couple of other boot discs or to buy another VGA box?
Edit, it depends on the game. Usually, I just get the message stating the that AV cable is not supported. Sometimes with boot disc I get sound and a blank screen.
On the games that don't work try booting the game without the video cable plugged in. I have to do that with some of my games. Once the game has booted plug the cable in. It should work. If not try and find a burn that has a VGA hack.

I got a vga cable from racket just over a year ago. I have always had color problems (like no green) but if I wiggled it all worked fine. This morning I had no green and now I am getting nothing but scrambled screen. Any ideas? Is my vga converter bad?

so the Dreamcast A/V out port was designed to support VGA output, and sega made their own VGA box, so I guess my question is what does the box do? and why is it necessary?
for my own education.

The Sega box just allows you to easily switch to RCA cables if the game doesn't support VGA. Otherwise it's just a normal cable..

If that continues, lemme know and I'll get you a new one. Sometimes things come loose.

I've had basically the same problem all along, but haven't been able to get any red and can't wiggle my way to it. Thought it was down to the monitor, after reading this thread i've found oout that it wasn't. Damn shame. Will I have to buy a new cable or can I get a replacement ?
