Do NOT Install Internet Explorer 8 Update!
Re: Do NOT Install Internet Explorer 8 Update!
IE8 keeps popping up in my Windows Updates and I usually just uncheck and ignore it. Even when I choose to hide it, it will eventually come back. So today I decided to install it, figuring this time it wont happen, but got the same results. I don't feel like searching the internet for some stupid fix to this stupid problem, so I guess I'll just keep hiding the update every few weeks or so.

I thought so too.Mozgus wrote:I thought ever since Vista/IE7, explorer and internet explorer became completely separate entities. How is this possible?

I had to reformat my computer last night (mininova used to be safe) and the first thing I did after the reformat was install MacAfee, and then IE8. No problems, nothing but smooth sailing.

Riiiiiiight... I downloaded entire series of old shows from the 90s, and the occasional application from there over the past couple of years. Yesterday I went there, before I could even get into the search field the thing locked my browser up. I ctr-alt-del'd it and it defaults to the processes tab, where I see ~.exe among the processes. I shut the computer down immediately while it was still locked up, and when I reloaded it I couldn't get anythng to work right.GSZX1337 wrote:Used to be safe? The Apprentice wrote:I had to reformat my computer last night (mininova used to be safe)

I haven't had a problem at mini, but then I I have a crapload of shitty sites blocked in my hosts file and I use flashblock so a random infected flash ad isn't going to get me. However mini might become quite empty soon. The Apprentice wrote:Riiiiiiight... Anyway, back on topic. Found this regarding the IE 8 new window thing. Maybe it will help.

(FYI, for fix #1 they mean right click on the IE icon and run as admin which will bring up all the prompts from the UAC asking if your mommy said it was ok and you have a note from your doctor)

Re: Do NOT Install Internet Explorer 8 Update!
Thanks for the link, I'll give that a try when I have the time. Honestly, I just didn't care enough to bother to try and search for a solution. Since one was provided to me, I see no reason not to at least try it. Worst comes to worst I'll just have to system restore and get rid of IE8 for a third time.
And as far as Mininova goes, it might be one of the safest torrent places around, but is by no means safe to care-free download anything. There's tons of viruses, for sure. It's pretty hard to download a TV show, movie or song and get a virus (you'd have to be an idiot) but there's a ton of programs that have Trojans and whatnot.
edit: I wasn't talking about the site itself, I was talking about the files you download from the torrents.

Ok, so I must have picked it up somewhere else or in one of the apps I downloaded, and something happened to trigger it while I was just starting to visit mininova.

Does anyone know how to keep this update from returning on a regular basis?Ziggy587 wrote:IE8 keeps popping up in my Windows Updates and I usually just uncheck and ignore it. I've heard bad things about IE8 from here and elsewhere, but Windows Update keeps trying to get me to download it.
