Novelty Video Games

Post by Luke »

I would classify novelty video games as those that retain a repeated platform, based on different franchises.

Examples:

MK vs. DC
Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, etc.

Is labeling a game as a novelty game wrong?

I would suppose they are more like Cross-Over games.

To me, a novelty game is a game that is pretty poor at least superficially, yet is still fun to play for shits and giggles. Here's the example I always use.

Another example I like to use is Street Fighter: The Movie, also for the Sega Saturn.

I'd call a novelty game something that heavily favours style over substance.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

If it's like Superman 64 and you're playing it because it's bad...

The Japanese term for it is kuso game (kuso-ge); shit game.
Which is a game that is appreciated despite or because of being not very good.

Any episode of GameCenter CX will probably net you at least one example.

That game that says "It was something very new in it's day" but once the public used to what is new in that game they see it diferently. That doesn't mean that the game doesn't hold up but it often happens.

Example: Dragon's Lair, musical videogames in the 90s, Katamary Damacy, Portal.
