A little of column A, a little of column B. Compare Mario 64 to Mario Sunshine to Mario Galaxy and you see less of a jump between Sunshine and Galaxy. The easiest way of explaining is is with 2D shapes. Let's say we want to draw a circle, but we can only draw using straight lines. A first-order approximation might be an octogon. There's a definate circular shape to it, but it's very angular. Now move up to a dodecagon. It starts to smooth out a bit. The more lines you add the smoother it gets, but the smaller each incremental improvement is. 3D graphics work the same way, only they use triangles to approximate curved surfaces.
Well, the suspension of disbelief has a bit more to it than polygon count. Physics, normal/specular maps, better lighting, and little nifty effects like depth of field and destructable scenery are helped to make Gears look so amazing in addition to more polygons. What wows me is that when I went back to RE4, although it lacked that extra polish, my nervous system felt just as "there" in these creepy, misty woods as I did in the Moria-like caverns of Gears. Maybe your analogy is like, RE4 is 12-sided polygon, whereas Gears is a 16 sided polygon, once you get that many edges the difference between that approximation and an actual circle becomes negligable.

When RE4 came out it amazed me when I saw it on a friend's cube. I have it on PS2 and its one of the better looking for that console and on my top 10 for said console. Have a copy on Wii and should hook it up via component to see it in all its glory.

Resident Evil 4 really pushed the limits of the last gen hardware. I have it on PS2 and I'm always a little surprised it is a PS2 game because it looks so damn good.

Man, I must be the only person here who doesn't care much for RE4.

It's definitely an above average action game. It's just, the way I look at it, it's a game that just happens to have monsters in it. It calls itself a Survival Horror game, and yet there was no survival aspect to it, and there was no horror aspect to it.

I always had plenty of weapons, plenty of ammo, plenty of herbs and plenty of money, so it's not like I had to conserve anything. Meanwhile, the best weapons my enemies could muster were flaming arrows shot from crossbows. Real intimidating. It's kinda hard to find the psuedo-zombies scary when you have fully-automatic machine guns and a shotgun that seems like it came right out of a John Woo movie.

I often find myself still amazed at Gamecube. I mean last night I popped in Super Mario Sunshine, which I hadn't played since it came out. And I kept catching myself just playing with the camera and looking at the scenery in awe.

I can't tell you how many times I have completed RE 4. I'm still in the process of trying to complete it on Professonal mode. Professonal mode is really, really hard! Right now I'm stuck when the helicoper shows up to save the day. :)
