Yep, the original GB is an amazing system. I need to start collecting game for it myself.
I agree. In theory the GBL is great, but you really need a dark room to make it worthwhile. The indigo-style backlighting just isn't strong enough to help in mid-light situations. The photo on the original post with the silver GBL and Super Mario Land looks Photoshopped, in fact. I've never seen a GBL with a screen that bright in a lit room. Still, the GBLs are pretty neat and make a good platform if you like original Game Boy games.

While I agree the GBA SP2 has the best screen by far, I much prefer the form factor of the pre-Advance Game Boys. I hardly play any Advance games these days, so most of my gaming is either on my GBC, a clear, skeleton edition from Japan similar to the American "atomic purple" but without the purple tint, or on a modded, pro sound, red backlit DMG-01 GB that I got from a guy in the UK. The DMG-01 feels the best in my hands as it doesn't feel like I'm gaming on a cell phone. The good ol' days when a "portable" just had to be small enough to fit in a backpack... sigh...

Those Game Boy Light's are so awesome! I am still hunting for one on eBay, but most of the ones on auction right now are in pretty bad condition.

I did get an Original Game Boy brick the other day that supposedly had a "perfect" screen. Got it in and there was dust and junk actually behind the screen! So I did what I love to do... took it apart and made it perfect!

Here's a pic of my classic Game Boy Collection. I picked up the case at Ikea last week and it is perfect with adjustable compartments.

Looks like a great collection there!

Your work on the classic brick reminds me that I need to get some Y screw tools to crack open a Game Boy.

That Ikea storage box looks just about perfect. Thinking I might need to get one of those.

Maybe it's just all the nostalgia, but I swear there is something cool about those pre GBA Game Boy games. Yeah... it must be the nostalgia.

Found this cool site that sells backlight kits for the original Game Boy! I need to pick one up, these look cool.

Very cool, those DIY seem attractively priced wonder how hard it is to install one.

I have a similar lighting mod to an old DMG-01 Game Boy. They do what they say, but the reality is that the original Game Boy just doesn't have the greatest contrast and blur a lot, making the lighting just part of the real problem. The Pocket models are better - and at that point you might as well just get a Game Boy Light as they are the same essentially, with the addition of the light on the GBL. It wasn't until the Game Boy Color where the contrast was greatly improved. If I were going to mod light a Game Boy, it'd be a Game Boy Color.

Any recommendations on instructions or a DIY site for the Gameboy Pocket LED mod? I agree, the contrast on the pocket is much better and would be my preferred choice, but for $13.00 for a kit, that's not bad!

On another note, I must have some kind of retro bug. My GBA SP limited edition NES model should be in this week and I'm on the hunt for a SEGA Nomad!

I used to have pretty much all of the protables and miss them. I don't think I'd ever get another Turbo Express though, I never really liked that one.

I'm so anxious, my NES Limited Edition GBA SP should be here tomorrow or Thursday and I already have a plan!

The NES version is frontlit which is, well, not nearly as great as the backlit GBA SP. I have a graphite backlit that I've already disassembled and am going to put into the NES edition! This should be the ultimate and will be better than the NES SP I used to have. Can't wait!!!

I saw one a couple weeks ago but the screen was scratched to shit. I was sad.

I'm more critical about the case since that is a truly unique body design. The screen can can and even LCD can be replace with parts from eBay or other online stores and aren't too expensive. The NES SP case though, that's where I'm more critical. If it's just a normal SP, you can even get replacement shells and just gut the electronics into the new shell. The SP is pretty easy to dissect and take apart, it only took me 5 - 10 minutes to get mine all apart.

I remember looking at Game Stops for my GBA SP and even GBA (still haven't found one) and I can't believe the state of some of them. The cases looked like someone had taken it and just rubbed into concrete on on pavement! There were even some with huge chips and it looked like someone had taken a bite out of them.
