Baten Kaitos?
Baten Kaitos?
I've heard this game is pretty good. I saw it for $15. I'd like to spend a little less, but I don't see this one very often. Is it so rare that I won't see it again? Is it good enough not to hesitate?

I don't think it's exceptionally rare, $15 sounds about right. It was interesting, it's a turn based RPG but it uses a card battle system. I ad to stop in the middle though, because of the way the level system is set up:
There are two kinds of save points, blue and red. You can only level up at blue save points. There's some airship dungeon, where you can't exit until you beat it, but there's only a red save point in it. So, when I got to the dungeon and saved, I was too low a level to beat the boss...but I couldn't level up until after I beat him, and there was no way to go back. Very frustrating.
I would say it's worth $15 though.

Is it the pt1 or pt2? Regardless, I have both entries its a great game with a cool art style. Its well worth $15.00. The battle system is very unique as well.

Some quick impressions:
-- The card battle system is neat and different, but wastes a lot of time with deck management. Overall I liked it, and thought that was the reason the game is worth playing.
-- The story wasn't particularly memorable, but did manage to improve as you go along.
-- Graphics are good. Environments look prerendered with a bit of motion/shine layered over top. Character models are a bit stiff, and attack animations get repetitive. The graphic design never appealed to me, but others seem to like it.
-- Voice acting really is bad. I'd say mute the game, but the music is pretty decent. So you'll have to decide for yourself if the audio is worth listening to.
-- The level up issue mentioned by dlmvii is dead-on. I didn't have that problem, but there is one point where I could easily see it happening. Best to keep an older save around when you start a new area just in case.
Worth playing once? I think so.
Worth going back to? Not likely.
You are probably better off playing Tales of Symphonia or Skies of Arcadia if you can find either of them for a similar price, but Baten Kaitos does some interesting stuff that I haven't seen before from an RPG. The $15 price point you mentioned seems like fair value, although I wouldn't pay more than that.

Re: Baten Kaitos?
I just found this game today for the same price and figured I'd see if there was anything on racketboy about it. Stiff animations and bad voice acting sound like a real bummer though. I'm getting tired of bad voice acting... I think I enjoyed it more on ps1 when no one had a voice. It bothers me when I have to go out of my way to mute voices because they are so bad. It looked like an interesting game with a very uniquely colourful world. I've never played any card based games before other than Metal Gear Acid which I've had some difficulty getting into.

Easy way to know if it's worth picking it up:
Do you want a good game or a REALLY GOOD GAME?
If you don't mind a good but not a wonderful game pick it up. The battle system is different and cool so it's not a Final Fantasy clone at all.
