Japanese games on consoles

Post by jmbarnes101 »

I've recently started purchasing some games from Japan and was easily able to mod my SNES and N64 systems to play them. What do I need to do to play Japanese games on the following consoles:

Sega Dreamcast
Sega Saturn
Gamecube
Xbox
PS1 and/or PS2

I'm mainly interested in the first three but since I have an Xbox and PS2 I figured I'd ask about them as well. I'm assuming since they are all CD based that it won't be as easy as the mods were on the Nintendo cartridge consoles. Any help would be much appreciated.

Dreamcast - boot disc, such as the Utopia one. Widely available for download.
Gamecube - Freeloader boot disc. Look on Ebay.
PS1, PS2, Saturn - you need to "chip" them as far as I know
Mostly harmless

Sega Saturn - 4-in-1 Action Replay

PS1 - Similarly, there is an Action Replay that can do this. However, I simply used to use a GamePro cheat disc. I'd load up a cheat code for some James Bond game, and then swap in an import PS1 game. Shazam.

PS2 - Swap Magic.

You can (and should) just burn it yourself. I wouldn't pay $7 for it, that's for sure.

PS2 has a boot disc, the name escapes. It is pretty weird, you put it in and then swipe a card through the disc tray to use it. My friend got it from play asia along with kingdom hearts final mix 2.

game shark also works for the saturn, its cheaper than the action replay but you lose the 4mb function...

and depending if your playstation one has a i/o slot there are devices like the gameshark
i know action replay is one...but i think you have to use a normal ps1 game to start out with then swap them out, so either that a boot disk or a mod chip

the xbox needs a mod chip,or to be soft modded

game cube free loader last i saw on the datel website you can buy it from them for 10 bucks plus shipping, or a mod chip if you want to go for backups

ps2 needs swap magic or a mod chip
