Why do I preorder games?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I never really pre-ordered anything until the first time I wanted to get a game when it came out, but didn't have the money on hand to buy it then and there.

I've since learned that I should pay stuff off little bit by little bit. For example, I want to get Demons Soul's Deluxe and Brutal Legend - so, instead of just waiting to buy them when they launch, I've been putting $20 towards them every pay-day. I've now already got Demons Souls Deluxe paid off, and Brutal Legend is half paid off.

It's just a much better system than "Crap, this game just came out! Lemme find $30-60 real quick!" Obviously, I don't do this with every game I want to play. Games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 can wait until I find 'em at a good price. I only pre-order the games I really want.

Does gamestop still have the company policy of rewarding employees who get preorders and penalizing those who cancel them?

I've never gotten commission on jack shit as GS is all about making a buck and screwing employees, but I heard from older employees that EB and all of the other companies they took over did.

As for if we get yelled at, lose hours on the schedule and looked down upon for canceling pre-orders, but then rewarded for getting them in the form of a "Good now go alphabetize the PS2 (HELL!) section" then yes; but it depends on the particular manager and store.

My store is a smaller one so pre-orders are more important, the other store across town is near a Wal-Mart so they always get a lot of business and they don't really give a damn.

Yeah, my managers always have me organize the shelves and shit while they handle the customers - then they pitch a fit when I have crappy numbers.

My store does semi-focus on pre-orders (we are actually winning a competition for having the highest number of pre-orders for Modern Warfare 2), but they seem more interested in selling subscriptions and warranties.

One thing that really pisses me off about the pre-order policy is that if someone cancels a pre-order, its the person that handles the cancellation that gets penalized, not the person who handled the original pre-order.

Seems ass-backwards to me, especially considering one of the employees really tries to force pre-orders on people who don't really want them. I get the feeling at least half of the cancellations I get are all because of him.

That used to be the case at my store, but our new manager we (while being a hard ass at certain times) really turned our store around from the ever widening hole it used to be in.

Still though our old manager was kickass in that before the big retro field destroy early last year he let us go a bit wild and order in a ton of retro stuff. For Example: PSone with LCD $13, Dreamcast lightguns at $7 a pop and I bought about 45 PS1 games (Including Thunder Force: IV & Strider 2) in a bulk shipment from a nearby store for about $15 total thanks to the 85% off firesale B1G1 free and Edge card all stacking together as the company just wanted to get rid of it all.
