Atari compatibility

Post by baschlives »

I just found an Atari XE game system. Can anyone tell me what atari games this is compatible with?

Can I play atari 2600 games on my Atari XE game system?

wikipedia is yr friend:

The XE Game System was essentially a repackaged 65XE, and was compatible with almost all Atari 8-bit software and hardware as a result. Bad marketing and a lack of newer releases hampered sales.

No. The XE is compatible with games for the atari 8-bit computer line. The Atari 400/800, etc. It's a great little system, more powerful than the 2600 by far, there are a lot of great arcade ports for it. Also you have to pick up Star Raiders, the 8-bit port is the definitive version (2600 version doesn't come close). You might want to check out the XEGS page at the Video Game Critic.

If you can't find any cartridges for it, there are devices that will emulate floppy drives. I'm waiting on one of these for my 600XL right now.

Close h8b1llg8ts, but that title goes to the FPS sports game - Ballblazer

Blue Max is pretty awesome though, get that too.

Thanks for the clarification. It can be tricky to find legit information on the atari brand.

True, the 2600 does have an 8-bit cpu. But informally, the Atari 400/800/XL/XE line are referred to as "Atari 8-bits", just for convenience. Wikipedia does it, AtariAge does it too. That's good enough for me.

Anyone in this topic know anything about the Atari ST computers? I haven't been able to figure out if there's a way of getting the files that run on emulators back onto a floppy to run on an actual atari st machine.

Not that I have the machine anymore since someone threw it away. But if I do decide to replace the system that someone threw away with a $300 refurb I'd like to sort that out.
