Dragon Warrior on the NES was my first, and I believe it was also the first RPG available on a home console. I liked it pretty well, but I was blown away by the first Final Fantasy when that came out about a year later. These games felt immense back then. I loved that they came with maps of the world along with your instruction book. It felt like a grand adventure. It seems kind of silly now, given how much more immense games are these days.

Yeah, but I miss the map. And the old maps would also have all the equipment on them, since the old games didn't have help text.

I remember when I managed to find Final Fantasy VI at a Funcoland it came with the manual and map, which was awesome. And I loved the map for that, since you get both the world of balance and the world of ruin.

I had the good luck of my first real RPG being Fallout 2. I had no idea what it was going to be like when I got it--a high school friend told me that it sucked and sold it to me for a dollar.

Oh, how wrong he was.

Final Fantasy VII. After that... I have no idea. Possibly FFVIII - which I found amazing at the time; that it actually surpassed FFVII for me was impressive.
That game seems to have a reputation almost as bad as FFVII nowadays; I find it rare on gaming forums to see someone put it in the good word for either games.

Well, I liked them then, but I don't know if I would enjoy them now.

Final Fantasy VI, followed by the likes of Final Fantasy IV, the Breath of Fire series, Lufia 2, Secret of Evermore, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, so on and so forth down the SNES RPG line.

Final Fantasy II (IV). I actually bought Dawn of Souls to play FFI on my GBA, but eventually just purchased it for my NES to get the actually good experience with the game.

My first RPG technically would be Dragon Warrior since I got it free with my Nintendo Power subscription. I didn't really take the time to understand it, so it just went into my collection.
The first RPG I really played and beat was Lunar for the Sega CD. I remember getting it because the dude at the used game store showed me the intro animation and I was like "WOW!"
The gameplay was simple, and I was older than when I first played DW, and the story keep me interested. Upon beating it I wanted to play more RPGs so I traded my Sega CD in (at the same used store) for a SNES and Lufia.
I keep my copy of Lunar though... and got another Sega CD on clearance at TRU followed by my first internet purchase ever - Lunar Eternal Blue direct from Working Designs.
