Internet Speed

Post by kunoh »

So the other day the cable guy (Comcast) came by and told me that they were upgrading my service for free. (Apparently people in my area were switching over to Dish Network). So now I have the "faster" Internet option for the same price that I was paying for the standard one.

I ran some speed tests and I average about 11 megabits per second - which is up from what it was before (3 megabits/s). The only thing I play online really is WoW and sometimes a few games of Team Fortress 2. Surprisingly, I really haven't noticed a difference that much. Anyone else care to post their internet speeds and what they play?

My 5Mbit internet usually gets about 1-2 Mbit with a 0.5 Mbit upload. I dont really do online gaming anymore, but surfing the internet is no problem. Hey, anything is better than the 33.6 Kbit modem I started playing TFC on!

I have the fast Comcast option as well and I get 11-13mbps as well. Downloads tend to average around 3mbps.

I play Enemy Territory: Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, some WoW off and on, and UT2004 with tons of mods.

EDIT: Speedtest says 15.7mb download and 5.2mb upload

I am guessing internet speed is like computer speed

I had 1 mb connection and when I upgraded to 4 , pages don't really load any faster or hardly noticeable , but when you download boy is it fast. I downloaded an episode of Desperate Housewives in like 15 min which used to take like 3 hours on my older connection.

In computers, email and word processing will not be faster with faster processor but rendering and playing high end graphics games will show results. Maybe your games are made to run on a maximum speed of 3 mb or so who knows.

Yeah to be honest, if Comcast started to charge me a higher price for this higher speed package, I'd call them and tell them to switch me back - the difference in hardly noticeable, but hey, I'm not complaining just yet - lol.

I've also bundled with Comcast, and as said the most noticeable speed increase is when downloading files off the internet. I wonder if it makes utorrent faster too...

Just tested my speed (Optimum) and it's 15.34Mbps down and 2.07Mbps up.

I kinda think the download speeds are ridiculous anyway. Yeah, 10-15Mbps is great, but when do I ever see that speed (aside from a speed test)? The best download speed I ever get is 2 or 3Mbps from a website or a torrent.

I guess I shouldn't complain though. If I'm downloading at 2Mbps there's still plenty of bandwidth left over. There's 5 or so computers that share this interenet, so if some one is downloading at 2 or 3Mbps there's still plenty left to browse the internet or even download more files. I guess this is where a 15Mbps connection really shines.

How do you test your speed?

Yeah, internet speed is interesting because a lot of it depends on the other guy, plus with webpages it depends on how fast your computer can render the pages. I've found that for everything except for torrents pretty much any cable/dsl speed will work.

Yea the actual web browser has a lot to do with your internet speed. I've found Safari to be the fastest myself, up after that Internet Explorer, then Opera, then Firefox.
