retro gaming nirvana

Post by nickfil »

i just read this article up on arstechnica where the guy goes on and on about how he has reached RPG nirvana. I think it can be said that it is a retro nirvana.

He writes about the samsung Q1 Ultra Premium tablet pc. Clocking in at 4.9"x9"x1.2"; 1.9lbs, it is bigger than your ds/psp/wiz or just about any other handheld, but smaller than a laptop. It boasts a touch screen with a split keyboard on both sides and a dpad on on the left, and 5 keys on the right.

Seriously. This thing is a fucking beast.

Perfect for all those scummVM games. Able to run just about any emulator, dos box, and older windows xp games on a beautiful large screen.

The only thing this guy couldn't really do well is action/fps games like system shock. Which, although that does kinda suck... I bet it is a little thrilling to have grim fandango and civilization games on the go.

The only thing i don't like is that it runs a little slower than i would like. I hope samsung considers making a newer version able of running games like the witcher.

When i think about a psp2 or a ds2, this is what i want. However, i think both companies would rather build something smaller.

That UMPC is nice!
I got an OQO 01+ for the same reason, and although it can run almost any older games I'd want it's still not quite there. It's a slow 1Ghz with 16mb vram. Had I known the OQO 2 was coming out less than a year later I would've waited and bought it instead. (now the model 1's are selling for ~500 used, but I payed much more)
Here's some games the model 1+ can run

Having pushed it to it's limits (I'm Justin on that thread) It really makes me want to get a model 2. I think that it is still the fastest computer in that small form factor, tho some slightly larger and more ergonomic / less boxy ones have surpassed it.
Here's some comparisons of some of them that are out there:

The Sony Vaio's with the 1024 resolution are really great looking too.

As a portable emulation machine it's just awesome. You can slide the keyboard out and map the buttons for all the old games into a controller-like configuration or just plug in a PS2 controller through USB. Add in a small scan converter and it hooks up to a TV. Having a full-on computer in your pocket is pretty useful too.

I think there is already another thread talking about this....from about 5 hours ago.

Either way, that's a really cool little pc. I wonder if typing of the dead would run on it...

There is another thread about this for sure. I've just post there

Typing of Dead require a full qwerty keyboard to run well and be fun. No way that split-keyboard can compete here.
