tablet PCs and retro RPGs

Post by chupon »

Not sure if this goes here - feel free to move.

I've been a console gamer for life with a few exceptions (SC, WC2, WC3, Baulders Gate, Diable, SCUMM stuff). Found this article and it really makes me want to follow this guys advice.

Let me know what you think. And are infinity engine games retro? I can't decide.

I really like the idea of that - though, good lord, I can't imagine spending $1200 for the privilege of playing old-school western RPGs on the go. I'm sure it could handle older RTS games as well, but I'd rather have something more powerful and a bit larger to play MMOs or similar around the house as well. For a lower price I'd consider it though; the article focuses on RPGs, but there's a plethora of older PC games that don't require the precision aiming of an FPS that would do well with a tablet. $1200 is just too much for games I could just as well play on a laptop, though.

I'm surprised those old games can deal with weirdo resolutions like 1024x600.

That's really cool. I'm not familiar with Rock, Paper, Shotgun.....looks neat though.

I wonder if there are 1920 X 1080 hacks/mods for the older games.

Looks good for 90's computer games, like most umpc's. Not so great for classic console games that require actual controls. Hopefully this was obvious to all of you.

It is also very pricey, like most umpc's. But I can understand how much nicer it is to comfortably play these games on the couch rather than an office chair. I think the Gamepark handhelds are still the best for emulating everything else, pick both up if you have that much money to blow on a umpc and then your in "retro gaming nirvana" as the other thread maker liked to put it.
